Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells - any views?

Well if you're looking at that kind of budget you will have loads of choice of lovely properties in T Wells. 7oaks is definitely well worth looking at with that money as well.
Might be worth considering Westerham as well. Beautiful village with lots of restaurants, shops and bars, well worth a drive through or a wander round on a saturday as it grabs your affection straight away.0 -

OMG so did I!! Lived there with my parents for 15 years!! Couldn't afford to buy property there myself though!
I've lived in Tunbridge Wells too, which was great.
Tonbridge is definitely far cheaper property wise, but there isn't so much there, shopping wise or socially.
The commuter train service from Tonbridge to London is a million times better than the one from Tunbridge Wells though, having experience of both. TW is on the Hastings line which is totally crap - I can't tell you how bad it was - there was one winter I don't think I ever got to work on time - so be warned if that is a consideration.
Shopping wise, there is a Waitrose in Tonbridge which has made it slightly posher, but generally it's much more downmarket than TW - that has a good shopping mall (Royal Victoria Place) and stacks of bars and quality restaurants. I loved living there for the social life (when I had one before kids came on the scene obviously lol).
I think the schools in Tonbridge are better than TW (both the girls and boys grammar schools have some of the best results in the country) but there are very good grammar schools in TW too.
From the budget you mention, you should be able to afford all locations, so you can pretty much take your pickLucky you

I moved there in 1981 and finally left in 1996 and lived quite near the church, so I probably heard your wedding bells ringing that day!! Did your husband have a drink to calm his pre wedding nerves in the G&D??

Glad to see that quite apart from anything else I've started some local reminiscences going!
Still looking down there - real problem is the shortage of property coming onto the market at the moment. Looking seriously at a place in Edenbridge at present. Difficult decisions!0 -
Mission nearly accomplished since I lasted posted on this back in Feb. Due to complete on new home in Aug and then move down in Sept.
A (currently) 7 bed "restoration project" - hope it doesn't turn into a money pit!
Very excited about the whole project though, and thanks again to everyone on this thread for your help.0 -
Best of luck new neighbour! We're hanging on for exchange on a property in Sevenoaks so we're just down the road from you!
Best of luck with the restoration

Where did you buy in the end? TW is my "local" decent shopping area, but I'm much further down the road near Battle.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
