Paying for a Funeral?

Can I ask for some advice on this problem please. When my mother died recently I was shocked at the cost of the funeral. I had no idea they were so expensive. The funeral director wanted payment while my mother's funds were still frozen, but we were able to pay, so this was not a problem. However, it has set me thinking…

Newlywed - yes please do post the details when you have access to them. It might be helpful to people on here to know exactly how things are handled in these circumstances, especially now the economy is forcing older people into more straightened circumstances.
