Unlock phone after contract is finished

Hi.

My 18 month contract with 3 is about to expire. I have a 6288 phone with them. As my contract is now coming to an end I'd like to get this phone unlocked and pass it to my wife or someone else. 3 want to charge me £15 for the privilege though. Why is this? Surely the phone is now mine?

My guess is that most people won't bother paying anything and these phones just become landfill.

How can I go about getting this phone unlocked?

The phone has always been yours since you got it!

£15 seems reasonable,(a 6288 isn't straightforward to unlock), you could try a market stall/computer fair to see if you can get it done cheaper.

It will work as it is with another 3 sim.

Is the charge for an unlock code particular to 3, or all networks??

Each network has their own policy (eg Virgin give you the code once you have spent £30 using the phone.)

Maybe 10 quid at a phone shop. Not much of saving I grant you...
