DWP Literacy & Numeracy Tests

Hello eveyone

Is there anyone who can help me find examples of the literacy & numeracy
tests for the CSA/DWP. Have searched both the DWP/CSA websites but
cannot find anything. Have an interview with CSA looming but think i need
some practice first with these tests.
Would be grateful for any help

Thanks everyone

When you're invited to the tests you will get several sheets of paper outlining the type of literacy and numeracy questions they will ask.

The literacy test is a passage of text and you have to circle the spelling errors.

The numeracy test is generally about rooms in a college and the questions relate to the numbers of rooms available, how many have computers, what % have disabled access. They're multiple choice questions and not difficult.

    Both tests are timed.

  • The literacy test is a 1 page document, a memo I think, and you have to circle any errors, be they spelling, grammar, or punctuation.

The numeracy test requires you to take information from several tables to get the answers to various questions - you can use a calculator, and the answers are multiple choice.

If you get past the initial sift of applicants, then they'll send you two sample tests outlining the type of thing you'll be asked.

The good thing is even if pass the tests, but aren't successful at the interview stage, the test remains valid and you can use it for up to one year; it will specify up to which level you can use it for, so keep the letter they send you with your results safe.

I know that for an interview for post in the benefits and claims section of the JobCentre there's a sheet in the informaiton pack they give you after they give you your successful test results, and it has 4/5 situations that they advise you think about before the interview and each question they ask relates the a subject on the sheet (if that makes any sense?!). I don't have my sheets anymore so can't be more accurate on the situations sorry. What section is the AO? I assume it's the same process for most posts in the DWP?

Indeed. In fact, the standard is so low that it explains why I feel that I'm talking to the village idiot every time I'm trying to explain something.

They will ask you for examples of competency, these are as follows,

1.Can you tell me about a time you had to meet a deadline?

2.Tell me about a time when you had to co-ordinate the input of a number of people when putting together a specific plan?

3.Can you give me an example of a time when you have enabled a team to deliver excellent customer service?

4.Can you tell me about a time when you worked with other people to achieve something?

Give as much info as you can but without writing a novel if you know what i mean.

    Hope this helps!
Got my tests this Saturday but done my competencies in advance due to inside info, the wife works there
  • My dad did the test.
Apparently some of the questions are like "2+2".
He thought they were having a joke, but apparently it was a real question (and some people got it wrong =l)

I wouldn't worry. It cant be too hard.

I sat these in November last year for the Pensions Agency.

They are exactly as a poster above stated - literacy is a memo where you need to circle the mistakes (think you need to get 9 or more to pass) and numeracy is a college with various rooms (some with computers some with disabled access) and they will ask you how many rooms have disabled access etc - but they do get harder and end up asking percentages (I hate percentages and simply guessed at that stage). I did pass and am on a waiting list for a post.

The interview is very competency based - try to prepare and memorise examples of teamworking, working under pressure, customer service etc. They will simply ask you to give examples of when you have undertaken each of these competencies.

    Try to arrange each competency example in the following way;

The situation (what were the circumstances)

What you do (and NEVER say We did this or We did that - they only want to know what you did)

The Outcome (always say the outcome was successful and give the reasons why)

    Hope this helps
