download Ewido first and run that

    www.ewido.net

    Install ewido.
During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    Launch ewido
It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
On the left side of the main screen click update
Click on Start and let it update.

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK

I installed ewido and scanned PC. 97 ifected items! All 97 cleaned by ewido, including the items mentioned in my earlier post. I presume that this is a trial and only valid for a few days/scans?
I then tried to update AVG and it worked!

    Thank you!

ewido is free all the time....some functions are turned off at the end of the trial but it remains a fully functional scanner...can't remember if you have to do manual updates after the trial ends

make sure you do those windows updates !!!! very important to do so !!

ok, first things first, run windowsupdate now https://www.windowsupdate.com. Are you on broadband - it's gonna take ages if not.

Posting the virus names would help us to help you..

I have now updated as you suggested and a security icon is now in the box at the bottom right of screen. AVG has also updated.
Do I need to worry if on scanning again, if I'm unable to clean all the infected items?

    Thanks

You should be able to either clean or remove all infections. If you can't, you should try and resolve it.

You are in a lot better position to repel infections before you get them now, but make sure everything is continually patched and updated.

If you use online banking etc, it might be an idea to change your passwords. If any of the stuff you had, had a keylogging component, that info may have been compromised.

As you have found, no one virus scanner is perfect, so use online scanners as well, as an extra safeguard.

Also, have a look at your hosts file, and make sure it doesn't have a long list of entries, as virus cleaners don't always bother (or can't) cleaning up the full mess created by viruses.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

you may need to scan in safe mode , instructions on how to get to safe mode are in here

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com...d.html?t=133269

to get rid of things completely as some things incorporate themslves with Windows so cannot be removed when it is fully loaded...safe mode only loads a very basic version of windows so you can remove everything :)
