one thing.... you can just hope that 1st is relatively empty, so you have some spare seats around you, and just relax and enjoy..

now, i know i said i'd glare if the child screamed, yeah, i would, but if the parents were doing everything possible to keep said child quiet, that's fine. but if the parents are just sitting there letting the child scream, thats when i glare...

Exactly. I would glare too. Frankly, I would rather spend half the flight standing at the back of economy than anyone think I was a bad or ignorant mother!

Do I detect a hint of misplaced jealousy?
    Jealous of what?!!

Obviously, a lot of meaning is lost in the written word. ;)
It's my job to make sure that the Execs you speak of secure First class travel and arrive at their meeting in tip top condition and suitably relaxed, and I take great pride in providing that service to them.
But it would be unrealistic and basically unfair to expect any passenger to be excluded from a cabin if they are behaving in a reasonable manner. It's about tolerance...

p.s. I always choose to sit at the back of the plane because that's where the black box is often kept and they always find that :D Joking aside, I do far prefer to sit at the back of the plane and I can sleep on a washing line, plus the best long haul flight I ever had was right at the back of economy and there was one hell of a party going on.

Yes, most First passengers are travelling on business but their employer clearly considers the £100 MILLION contract they hope to secure worth the money to have their top Execs arrive in tip-top condition. So the rest of us mere mortals hoping to keep our jobs in the biggest Worldwide recession in living memory risk losing everything when 12 CEOs are kept awake by one restless baby.

Exclusivity is a necessary evil. This isn't about personal rights - it's about protecting UK industry and we rely heavily on orders/deals from overseas.

Oh what a load of tosh. They do it because the company pays and they can get away with it, it is nothing to do with being more important than anyone else! Lots of people can sleep just fine on long haul flights even in cattle class.

Exclusivity is about massaging people's ego's.

Enjoy having yours massaged and have a wonderful trip!
For everything else, there's MSE :T

Thank you, I will! I should stress that I have also slept brilliantly in economy on 12 hrs flights - down to 3 mini bottles of white wine and an ipod. Sadly neither are appropriate with a baby!!! ;0)

They do it because they are travelling on business, because it is their companies policy and because it is all part and parcel of the conditions of their employment. ;)

Nobody said they were, however it is important to employers that their employees have the tools to carry out their function effectively and if that means having a travel policy that permits Business class or First class, then so be it, it is the employer who dictates travel policy, not the employee, hence your venom is misdirected. ;)

No doubt some people can get a good nights sleep in cattle class, however I would suggest that 99 times out of 100 passengers will get a far better kip in Business or First.

But this is not about exclusivity is it? ..... This is about comfort. ;)

aah reminds me of my trip to NYC last year in economy.. 3 pints at the airport, not a lot of sleep, some beer on the plane, and fell asleep for about 6 hours of an 8 hour flight... bliss..

here's hoping i can repeat that again in 6 weeks
  • I hope you have a great trip in First.

Basically if you have a ticket, you are as entitled to be in First class as anyone else. It doesn't matter if it is paid for by yourself, by your company or via a miles redemption. A First Class passenger is a First Class passenger.

I've got a few First Class long-haul flights scheduled in April and July. (bmi Diamond Club redemptions) I have no concerns about babies disturbing me based on past experience. However I have been kept awake by loudly snoring fellow passengers who are enjoying a rest at the expense of others. Maybe we should ban them from First Class too? (Assuming they are not one of the few top executives bravely keeping our economy afloat )

Most crew use their discretion for babies during turbulance
The Civil Aviation Authority don't recognise the term "discretion" with regards to cabin safety. Whilst the seat belt signs are illuminated all children MUST be removed from bassinets. Your company will have issued you with a safety manual that states this in black and white.

Turbulence is far from an exact science, such that even Pilots can't accurately predict the location and severity - and they have hi-tech computers and a panoramic view. A few bumps here and there could indicate much bigger bumps ahead by which time it's too late to take action. If the seat belt signs are switched on the very least you should do is contact your Captain rather than attempt to exercise discretion that could prove fatal.

The 747s on Singapore are terminators, the through flights to Sydney are on 777s.
BA's current timetable would agree with you but that could change at any time and isn't what you said above.

I bet they haven't just come from a 12-hour day at the office with another 12-hour day scheduled to begin the minute they step off at the other end. The passengers sat up front can't spend 2 days on the beach getting over the jetlag.
