Free money???

I woke up one day this week to find a credit on my current account (small amount of 4.21) that was labelled with my name and withdrawal but I had no idea where it came from. After investigation it came from a Natwest account 60-00-01 39**8618 - anybody know who/which institution that is? (I don't even have an account with NatWest).
Apparently the same thing happened to somebody else (http://the-hug.org/opus866.html?printable=Y)

Not sure if I need to worry about somebody possibly having an account under my name there?

  • First off I'd remove the first 4 digits of that acc no. from your post!
Secondly, you can look up UK sort codes on wikipedia!
edit: which it seems you've done cos you say it's Natwest, which it is!

Someone has probably just accidentally sent it to the wrong account, just inform your bank that you've been given money in error, they should deal with it.

Why? If you could do anything nefarious with just an account number and sort code, then fraudsters could just sit there all day with a random number generator...

Or sets up a direct debit to a charity.:whistle:
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

You'd need the accountholder's name for that.
  • I was actually just thinking for data protection / privacy reasons rather than specific fraud/security concerns.

I just would consider it rather impolite if that were my acc number.

well the point is that it isn't a person's account - otherwise their name should come with the transaction! in this case it had my name against it and i certainly do not hold that account.
but i took 2 digits out anyway...
  • Have you ever had an account with Natwest or subsidaries? Lots of banks are chasing "dormant accounts" in preparation for handing over anything left to the treasury.
