Forgot to get an MOT

Help! Just realised my MOT was due 3 months ago. I completely forgot. (Think I expected the garage to write to me - like the dentist does!)

Furious with myself and I know I've been driving illegally. Does anyone know *how* illegal this is? Do I need to own up to my insurance company? Will I be charged a penalty as well as the test fee? Have done the usual internet searches but can't find the answers.

Will book test first thing on Monday, and the car stays on the driveway until it's done.

Just get it tested, no need to tell the insurance and you won't get charged.

Don't lose any sleep over it. As long as you don't have an accident you need to claim on or get pulled up by the police before you get it tested then you'll be fine. So I would avoid driving the car except to the test centre.

I would certainly not let the insurance company know and there is no penalty charge as far as the test is concerned.

    Good luck with the MOT.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Last year ours ran out in May and only in October when we realised that the Tax Disc was due for renewal and we hadn't had the V5 (or waht ever it is these days).

We had changed address and had only changed our licence, not the V5 - so didn't get the reminder. The very helpful Post Office lady put our tax disc thru for the next month, so essentially didn't pay for November and didn't get charged by the DVLA.

You really need a system to remember stuff like this, if your tax is out of sync with your MOT it is hard to remember, how do you remember birthdays/anniversaries? can you put your MOT reminder in the system?

You are allowed to drive your car from your home to the test centre without an mot as long as you have a pre-booked test.

  • You could use the tart alert. Then you'll get an email to remind you when it's due :)

I realised on Wednesday that my MOT had expired on 22nd December :o

I had it done on thursday so I'm all legal again :D

I forgot as my MOT is usually due a day or so around my car tax renewal date.... so I don't know WHAT happened

Don't worry about it, just get it done asap.
Just run, run and keep on running!

  • Thank you all for being reassuring!

I now have it programmed into about 8 different reminder systems (well: mobile phone, paper calendar & work task list) so I can't forget next year.

One upside is; I've saved the cost of the MOT test in not driving this weekend: can't do a supermarket shop, haven't been to Ikea.
