My view too.Like Curry Queen we buy good quality meat, not organic but free-range where appropriate. It costs more but we only eat it twice a week on average. We eat more fish and pulse based meals.I have a tight food budget too.0

a man walks into the butchers and says
"i bet you £50 you can't reach that bit of meat over there on the top shelf."
butcher replies - " no - the steaks are too high "

CQ I know you're not preaching hun, you're too nice to do that, however to some degree I do agree with calley. It's not just about what you can afford by cutting down on other things, some times there are other factors involved. I literally only have control of my food budget money. DH will only eat meat 7 days a week and will not try anything veggie, DD likes her chicken nuggets etc and the only way I can make sure these are healthy is by buying the raw ingredients and making them myself. They may not be totally organic and healthy but at least they're not as bad as the ready made rubbish from the supermarket.
I make savings all over the place with different things cutting down the bills and outgoings (my car is going today) but as fast as I make savings DH wants the latest gadget or DVD and my savings go up in smoke. So although it's nice to have morals and principles please people, don't automatically judge someone elses ways until you have walked in their shoes.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

We buy all our meat from the local butcher. I know that some of it isn't as cheap as the supermarket, but by jove it's far better quality. The butcher knows where his meat comes from (it's all from a 10 mile radius!) and local farmers have actually formed a co-operative to supply this one butcher! This means that although it's not organic, the animals have not had to travel for miles to be slaughtered, which affects the quality of the meat.
On a slightly different note, I went to a lovely restaurant yesterday for lunch (I wasn't paying, don't worry) and they were able to tell you where all their meat came from. Not just the name of the butcher, but the name of the farmer too! How many restaurants can do that?

What ever you do don't buy the tesco frozen turkey mince reduced to 99p. I have just used it to make lasagne and I am feeling really sick. There is still a load left but I will have to throw it away, it is so disgusting!! I knew I was making a mistake when I started browning it off. Unfortunetely I bought a few bags and I will have to give them to my cats. Infact it really reminds me of the chicken I used to buy from the pet shop!!!!Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

Hi All,
Dont know if this is the place to be asking or not but seemed like the right thread. Reading this has made me take stock of the amount I spend on meat - OMG!!!! I've been a bit of an ostrich IYKWIM, head in the sand and all that. Being vege I've never taken note of how much it costs I just grab it for dh and sprogs.
I must confess to buying value steak from tesco, therest is tesco own label but at an estimate I buy the following each week;
chicken breasts £5-£6 per week
sausages £1.20ish per week
steak £2.80ish per week
mince 50p per week
£9.50-£10.50 per week!!!
This sounds excessive now having read the previous posts. We move in 4 weeks and arelucky enough to have a farmers market in the new town once a month. Do you think I would be better off placing a bulk order once a month at this market? I know the meat will be local and of better quality, I willbe supporting the local economy rather than lining Mr T's pockets. Does anyone know how much more it will cost me to do it this way??
Thanks,

kiwi - when you move you'd be as well searching al your local meat sources. Some farmers markets can be quite pricey, although you will be getting local and hopefully much better meat.
Another option could be ordinary local markets as well as local independant butchers. I go to one butchers for beef, another for chicken (same market) and when I'm in another town on market day, I get lamb and eggs from a third butcher. All my meat is locally sourced, top quality and loads cheaper than Tesco (where I now only buy one particular OB sausage as that's all the kids will eat)
Take a pen and paper with you when you start shopping in your new town. You might want to keep a list of Tesco's prices to compare against, until you decide which outlet you favour.0
