I have just had my first trip to the local butchers :T
I bought:
6 rashers of bacon
2 (large) pork loin steaks
1kg of lean beef mince
8 large chicken thighs
12 pork sausages
270g chump/chuck (?) steak (I asked for braising which they didn't have but suggested this)
Total price - £15.77
I think this is pretty good value - what are your thoughts?
Thanks

To me that would seem expensive but I always buy my meat from my local market in bulk. I spend about 30 quid usually and come home with enough stuff to half fill my freezer. He does 10lb of chicken portions for a fiver, 3 huge joints of meat for a tenner. 3 whole chickens for a fiver etc etc.
p.s. Co-op have a BOGOF on Danepak bacon atm, 1.99 for 12 rashers.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Oh dear - moggins, your market makes my shop look like it's come from Harrods :rotfl:

hi
i go to the local farm shop for my meat.
they have a good meat section in there. they do the usual steak/chicken/lamb etc - but their sausages are amazing. they work out at about 20p each but they are all meat and fantastic. first time i put them on my george forman i was worried because no fat came out ( i used to buy Richmond sausages - ) but they are superb. i bought a slow cooker the other week - best thing you can do meat in
sorry not to help on prices but i guess if you get quality stuff - it is worth paying a bit more for
cheers

Hi
Im very interested in this thread. I normally buy meat and poultry from supermarkets when placing online orders (normally asdas or occasional Tesco). I buy organic when I can but this only occurs when its greatly reduced:o
Is the meat/poultry at butchers organic or just the same as I would purchase from Asda? Have noticed before when going past a butchers that some of the meat looks half frozen, which wouldnt be able to frozen again
Where we used to live there was a weekly market and bought my meat and poultry from there. 3 big joints (beef, lamb or pork)for £10. 4lb of chicken breast for £5. 3 medium chickens for £5. Normally bought every 4 weeks:3 large joints, 3 chickens, 4lb chicken breast, 3lb mince steak, 6 pork chops, 6 lamb chumps, 12 thick sausages, 1lb back bacon. This used to be about £30 for a months meals. No longer live there and dont know about local markets etc.
There are local butchers but dont know what there like-is there anyway I could find out?
Thanks

:j I am a happy little bunny as where I live in Kent we have a local butcher who even buys locally from the farms. I can get 10lbs of chicken pieces at the moment from his shop at 2.99.He does a 'special' every week. His meat is superb and I wouldn't shop anywhere else. You only have to see the queue on a Saturday morning to know his stuff is good. His shop is about ten feet away from the entrance to a Tesco metro. he also competes withe an Iceland about 20 feet away.I know he has shops all over the Medway and along the east Kent coast.
He is a lovely chap as well, and likes to get to know his customers. He is only in his late thirties, and if anyone lives in the Medway area they have probably gone into one of his shops. I'm sure that Tesco would love him to up sticks and move ,but he has definitely got the monopoly in Rainham.:money:
To go back to pre-packed meat that is sitting under artificial lights to make it look pink I think I would rather turn Veggie.
We also have a local Greengrocer and to get fresh friut & Veg that hasn't been sitting on shelves for a couple of days is a delight.
In Station road Rainham there is also a 'wet' fish shop where fresh fish can be bought daily.:j0 -
our farm shop doesn't have its own animals - but it has a 'proper' butcher so if you cant see what you want he will get it. as i only cook for myself i stick with sausages and chicken pieces mainly - but there are big (3 kilo) bits of lamb and beef for sale - too big for me but it looks like it would feed a family for a few weeks - don't think it is organic - but it is all nice
cheers

I also normally buy our meat in Tesco or Asda. I've tried to compare what it would cost in the supermarket for the same amount that I bought. I think that it cost practically the same but looks much better quality. I don't think that it is organic meat (I imagine they would advertise it if it was).
I seem to have lots of meat (enough for about 20 meals), so about 75p per portion. This will depend though on how much I can stretch it with veg, pulses etc...
I do like the idea of buying locally (not always in the big supermarkets). And also the fact that I have virtually no packaging to get rid of. I'm sure there are good and bad butchers (like everything). I only found out about this butchers last week, so I'll have to wait to see on the quality front.

I use the same butcher every week, I just got 2 large sirloins and a huge ham shank for £6.50, we have los of meat and some HM "ready meals" in the freezer and we both have a few nights out next week so I didn't buy as much this week as I do sometimes.
Ham is boiling away with some mushy peas for tea, can't wait....0 -
We have a fab Butcher in our village who often sells 5lb of mince for a fiver as a special offer, and if you're a regular and you ask if the offer is still on he usually lets us have it for the same price. Also a sack of potatoes which lasts for ages for £5, they are grown locally as are his carrotts. You can really taste the difference and it's cheaper than the supermarkets or farm shop.
I also think it is really important to look after your local small businesses, I'd rather they earned my cash and not the Supermarkets.0
