Is my T610 actually locked?

Ok so a number of posts and people say a lot of contract phones aren't actually locked so a new sim can be dropped straight in.
But without getting a new sim from another network is there a way to tell?
My cunning plan is to use my old T610 (previously on 02) and a local sim when we go to the usa as my newer handset is 3g but only dual band!
Help please!

You must know SOMEONE that has a non O2 sim you can try?
The one from your new phone may even work .. the phone doesn't have to register a signal, just get to the menu .. if it does then its unlocked0 -
if you press <**<
(the < is left with joystick and cant remember if its sim in or out)
it should say personalised with MNC2 or something, then you can select locks and if it shows a padlock closed then it is locked - if all padlocks are open then it is unlocked0 -
I tried this and there are a few things with open padlocks - the one entitled Networks was unlocked. But there was another item called Network subset which was locked. Does that mean my sony ericsson is locked?0
