Student Tax refund, advice please!

Hello

I have a question about reclaiming tax I paid as a student, but without needing a P45 because I still work for the same company.

I firstly did a full time BTEC National Diploma course for two years which led me on to a full time Foundation Degree for 2 years & then a 1 year full time BA top up to get my degree, finished in June 2008. I worked part time for Royal Mail the whole time working weekday evenings, about 18 hours a week taking home £130 - £140'ish after deductions.

I'd like to find out if I'm owed back any of the tax I paid during this period but all threads I've read about this so far assume that a student no longer works for their term-time employer. Since finishing my degree I've done as much overtime as I can on top of my basic part-time contract so I've been working a total of about 37 - 40 hours a week. Therefore I don't have a P45 to send to the inland revenue.

Can someone please tell me how to go about claiming back any money I'm owed, what forms I need, who I need to contact etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated because I'm absolutely clueless!

You need to know how much you earned gross during the 2008 tax year i.e. from 6th April 07 to 5th April 08. If you earned less than your tax free allowance of £5,225 during that time you shouldn't have paid any income tax, if you earned more then the first £5,225 you earned shouldn't have been taxed.

It sounds complicated but according to DirectGov all you have to do is "tell your employer's Tax Office why you think you've paid too much tax. They may already have everything they need to check your claim. If not, they'll tell you what documents to send. You may get a new tax code, so any refund will be included with your wages."

you should have received a P60 at the end of each tax year... post up the figures and lets see them.. if not your March payslip should have the running totals and your tax code

but basically if your tax code was correct then its likely the tax is correct

this year it should be 603L
    2997-8 is was 522L
    2006-7 is was 503L
  • Hi guys, thanks very much for your responses so far! I'll speak to the guy that deals with pay disputes tomorrow and see if he knows what's what. I'll also look for my P60 forms and post up what I find.
    Thanks again.
  • Okay, so the guy I need to speak to about pay wasn't around yesterdy so I'll have to look for him tonight. In the meantime I went to my Dad's house and rummaged through my old things to look for my old P60s.

I only found 1 P60, End of yar certificate 2007-08, says my final tax code is 0531L.

I also found 2 Paye coding notice documents, one says "Your new tax code for the year 6 April 2006 to 5 April 2007 is 521L which replaces 503L"

The other says "Your new tax code for the year 6 April 2007 to 5 April 2008 is 531L"
So far I can't find anything earlier than2006.

Does that help anyone or do I need to keep hunting for the original P60 forms and if I can't find them can I request duplicates?
    Thanks.

for the tax year 2007-8 the normal tax code was 522L so you seem to have a higher (better ) allowance ... do you know why? There should be an explanation on the notice of coding

for tax year 2006-7 the normal tax code was 503L so your one of 521L is better. again there should be an explanation on the notice of coding

Obviously you need to start keeping all your tax record and payslips.
