moving from O2 osps to O2 iphone?

Here's the situation I'm in, and the three questions I have regarding it...
Currently I'm looking at replacing my existing walkman phone with an iphone 3G. I'm currently on O2 but through onestopphoneshop. My contract can be terminated from this month.
1. I know there are mixed as well as positive reviews on the iphone but I have liked it when I've tried it out. Are there any imminent serious competitors I should look at or wait for?
2. Is there any visibility over whether O2 will be cutting prices at any point over the next couple of months?
3. I have no idea if I can move from O2 osps to O2 easily, or if I have to go into O2 as a totally new customer... What's the best way to approach this and get a good deal?
