Sony Ericsson W800i problems

Options
Has anybody else had problems with the new Sony Ericsson W800i? I got one the other day as an upgrade from Orange for the brilliant built in MP3 player. When I tried to transfer MP3s to it using the supplied Disc2Phone software, the phone just dumped most of the tracks as soon as I disconnected the USB cable. I even tried drag-and-drop onto the memory stick using Windows XP but the same happened.

Orange could not sort out the problem and referred me to Sony Ericsson UK who said that it was a problem with the phone's software. Unfortunately, Orange had not approved the available software update yet so they could not help either. Orange could not tell me when the software would become available so I had to return the phone to stay within the 7 day return clause.

I find it incredible that Orange can release a batch of phones which don't work correctly.

i had no problems putting mp3 / m4a files onto the phone - also i used both the disc2phone software and the drag to memory stick method. i suppose this is now irrelevant as you say you sent the phone back but you do have to be careful in where you put the files - there is a strict folder structure that must be adhered to on the w800i otherwise the files will not be seen by the phone - additionally you will have to disconnect the phone in order for files added to show up when browsing via the handset. just wondering what you meant when you said that 'the phone just dumped most of the tracks' really.

(i'm on O2, running xp pro sp2 on the pc, latest firmware from SE for the w800i)

  • I think thats where the difference is you are on 02. Sony said Orange had not approved the new software.

    It isn't at all unusual.

In fact the last two phones I had from Orange (The nokia n70 and the 6630), both had major faults on them caused by the sfotware and had to be returned.

  • Did they actually correct the problem or did you end up changing to a new phone? my contract is up in February, I like the package I am on text3000 but will change company if needs be.

They did correct the problem on the 6630s, they recalled ALL of them!

My hubby has one on orange though, and he has no trouble with it, so ot sounds like you may have a faulty hansdset. Call them and say you want a replacement, as the one you have been given doesn't work properly.

  • It is going back to Orange on Monday, I hope it is ok, the phone is fab apart from that.
  • It is a good idea not to unplug immediately after using Disc2phone, give it a few minutes and use safely disconnect hardware rather than just unplugging.

Go into MY COMPUTER >>> Right mouse button Select PROPERTIES of the drive which appears as your W800i memory stick >>> click on HARDWARE tab >>> Double click on the drive which is your memory stick >>> Click on POLICIES tab >>> Select lower option OPTIMIZE FOR PERFORMANCE >>> OK

Works for me before and after I updated to very latest firmware via SEUS.
