can't get our money back

Apologies, firstly, if this is not the correct place to post this.
My wife placed an order with an on-line company in November. She paid by cheque. The company phoned her to say that part of the order (some of the items) were unavailable and would not become available in future - would she like to choose alternatives? She said she'd think about it. Later she contacted the company by email and said there was no alternative she wanted - she would like a refund. They (their representative) responded by email that they couldn't issue a company cheque that evening and would sort it out with accounts the next day. That was in December. Since then between ten and twenty emails to the company have gone unanswered. The company phone is either engaged, not answered or the receiver lifted and placed beside the phone.

What next? Is this a situation in which the small claims court could be used? The value of the items that were not supplied and for which no refund has been forthcoming is about £28.

The company involved is small. It appears to be a shop that has expanded into mail order and is about 400 miles from where we live.

  • Sorry. What I meant was 'if this is the wrong forum, is there another moneysavingexpert forum where I can ask whether the small claims court is suitable for attempting to recover £28?'

    small claims costs you £30 to sue them, but if successful it gets added to the £28 already owing; howvever...
    ...only do this if there is a realistic chance of getting the money back ie are they still in business~?? If not then your money is probably gone.
