basill wrote:Just had a quick look at that site, they recommend using salt even with three in one salt tablets as these dont soften the water.
Actually it says "Three in one salt tablets do not activate the water softener. For optimum results, the reservoir should be topped up with granular salt."
That means that they do soften the water, but they do it in the washing cabinet rather than in the in-line water softener. There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

Hi Hunnymonster, just ead that page again and I think it means the opposite, this quote from Get cleaner dishes page
"Some 3-in-1 tablets contain an ingredient, which has a 'salt action', which also helps to improve cleaning, but NOTE this is not a substitute for adding salt to the water softener.
The salt action takes place in the cleaning chamber of the machine, but does not actually replenish the water softener. Research has shown that whilst 3-in-1 detergents do clean dishes effectively, their performance is improved by adding salt to the water softener reservoir."
I dont think adding salt to water will soften it on its own. So using the built in softener should be beneficial to both machine life and cleaning.

By the way...
I seem to remember someone talking about putting a lemon in the dishwasher on here but don't know what thread it was; how does this work and what does it do?0 -

Yes it seems to last some time, but I tend to top it up every few washes or so.
My sis told me you can tell if you run out of rinse aid as you get streaks across the dishes and glasses.
I replaced my salt last night for the first time since getting dw and lo and behold there was water!! I put in the 2kg recommended when I first got it, and last night just put in a small amount and the water came out.
On another site I go on, one of the women uses bicarb. soda for wash and vinegar for rinse aid. Well I have been topping up the rinse aid with white vinegar and have noticed no difference. The bicarb soda got all the glasses plates and cutlery clean, but the tea mugs were all brown and smeary. I am going to use vinegar half and half with the rinse aid.
I bought the Finish dw powder, and have some of the 3 in 1 tablets. I found Sainsburys to be the cheapest at 8p a go, compared to Morrisons 10p a go. Co-op works out 5p when they go BOGOF but they dont have rinse aid. When I have used my tablets I will use powder and the rinse aid 50/50 with vinegar.
Its all been a bit of a novelty to me, first time I ever had one and believe me I love that white angel in the kitchen!!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hi, just wanted to say I hate washing up by hand apart from the fact I have to wear rubber gloves due to my eczema.
I have been on to my husband for the last couple of years that I would love a dishwasher. About 6 months ago my father-in-law was clearing out his house after split and asked us if we would like the dishwasher. It is not new at all, have been with husband 10 yrs and they had this before that. But we said yes, father-in-law said wasn't sure if still worked as had been sitting for awhile. But this weekend my husband actually plumbed it in and I am ecstatic that it works. No more washing up thank you, especially as my eczema has flared up again with me on my 3rd pregnancy. No more washing up before playing with the kids. Even my 5yr old son has got into putting his dishes straight in the dishwasher. I have used some free samples of glist 3-in-1 tablets I had sometime ago and this morning sent for glist 5-in-1 tablets. After which I will be trying ideas from here. Thanks guys.:smileyhea:heart: Mrs Lea Nov 5th '11:smileyhea

My Idesit lasted 19 years and held loads more and was easier to stack and washed the dishes and cutlery much better than my brand new Bocsh which I bought to match the fridge and washing machine. Next time I buy cheap!!
ps the council were going to charge £15 to take it away. My 12 year old son wanted the switch to play with so he took it off. Then he took off the motor, then the pump and so on. He bashed the panels and we squashed it all into our great big wheelie bin. I gave him £5 extra pocket money cos he worked so hard.Love living in a village in the country side0 -
Last dishwasher lasted years - until ex hubby & I splitting up - he bought me out house & I insisted he paid extra for built in dishwasher............. to which he agreed.
Sitting in kitchen one night after everything settled we heard a crack... then another..... then dishwasher hinges collapsed & door fell off..............:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
He had last laugh though - as soon as divorce came through he stopped maintenance.....
Still makes me laugh though.....:jA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

I have a slimline tricity bendix which I got from my catalogue about 3 years ago. Very basic model but it does the trick. Shame it's not bigger though as i still have to spend ages washing big items. My friend puts everything in hers including chopping boards! Does anyone else do that?Mortgage-free wannabe!0
