Cocoa was on on the list of daily foods in the OS household. Cocoa is a secret superfood with loads of antioxidants and is an excellent source on minerals especially magnesium which is necessary in our diet and works with calcium, potassium and vit D. Most people are short of this essental mineral
Do you think people are short of vit D because they're not drinking enough full fat milk?0 -
I agree with you about cocoa Maltesers, I was reading about the good things in it last night. Trouble is just how do you make it tasty without sugar?

The best way to do without sugar is not to introduce it to children in the first place. I gave up sugar with difficulty but after a couple of weeks my taste changed and I don't miss it. Adding sweetners is not a good idea.
I think people are short of vitamin D more today because we have been told to use sunscreen (most vitamin D come from exposure to sun - in the summer months only in this country) and eat less butter etc. Also many animals are now kept indoorrs so they do not get sunlight to absorb vit D into their fat, which we are told not to eat anyway. Only good source in winter is codliver oil which was given to all OS kids and cold water fish.0 -

Does dark chocolate have the same nutritional benefitI agree - cocoa without sugar is too bitter to be palatable.
Magnesium is also found in spices, nuts, cereals, coffee, tea, and vegetables (especially green leafy ones) and aids the bodies ability to absorb calcium :T

Anyone know how to 'puff' rice or 'pop' rice at home?
I think I'm going to have to Google that now, it's going to bother me not knowing exactly
well, that was interesting ... you need steam & pressure (no vacuum) to puff rice, there's an explanation here at HOW STUFF WORKS some of the cereals mentioned are American, but the basics are the same0 -

It's the internet - it's not real!0 -
What about bananas I think they have magnesium, with a glass of milk. Some people like banana sandwiches or bananas on toast but when we were little we had chopped bananas with milk on.April grocery challenge week1 £39.91/£40:T week 2 £41.17 /£40 week 3 £41.96/£40 week 4 /£400

Dark chocolate has some of the benefits but is made with the cocoa fat as well as powder so is higher in fat. Cocoa used to be drunk with spices not sugar but it can be added to cakes, biscuits and custard etc, or mixed with marscapone, ground almonds to make truffles, or added to smoothies.
Magnesium is in many of the things you mention but not in sufficient quantities. Cocoa and nuts are by far the best sources available to us these days. There is plenty of information about the loss of minerals from the soil over the years which means vegetables do not have so much and grains don't have any left after processing. There is a salt called Solo which has magnesium, potassium and sodium but only available at Morrison's supermarket and health food stores.0 -
