OS Breakfast Cereals

Options
I have successfully managed to go OS on just about everything we eat but I am struggling with breakfast cereals.

My 2 DS's don't like porridge or muesli but love coco pops, shreddies etc.

I am struggling to find a more OS breakfast cereal for them that they will actually eat. Everything we eat is HM except for the breakfast cereals and I have been giving in and letting them have what they want because we eat so healthily for every other meal but I would really like to find an OS cereal that they will eat?

Any suggestions?

    What about plain puffed wheat?

It's one of my favourites - basically Sugar Puffs, but without the honey and sugar. And no Honey Monster on the box.

I think last time we got it, it was a big box (1kg? In any case, bigger then the normal) and it was from Asda.

Don't often eat cereal myself, but I like to have some around - and this was around for ages! Not sure your young'uns'd let it last so long :)

If your nearest supermarket's Tesco, you should be looking for this:

Might be useful, asking their Customer Services if they'll stock it for you? Could be worth a go.....

  • We do have a thread about homemade granola. I make it sometimes but only 2 of my 3 eat it.

Have you thought about not having cereal for breakfast? Breakfast cereals are not necessary and are no better nutritionally speaking than eating wholemeal toast.

Most of the nutritional value of a bowl of cereal and milk comes from the milk. Cereals other than oats are highly processed and not good value for money -most of the cost of a boxed cereal pays for the advertising campaign and the box. Try grinding up a serving of cereal, you'll end up with a couple of tbsp at most.

Breakfast my kids have that are quick and easy are beans on toast, cheese on toast, American style pancakes, porridge, toast and jam/marmite, fried leftover potatoes and bacon, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon sandwiches. Served with a glass of whole milk and a piece of fruit.

Good idea, I'll buy a box and see if they like it. Any more suggestions?

Anyone know how to 'puff' rice or 'pop' rice at home?
  • You could try popping corn for breakfast and tossing it in a little honey and melted butter. Pour milk on and eat like cereal.
  • If your kids eat Shreddies I don't think they're as evil as some. You could check the ingredients to check they're all recognisable as food.

Pancakes and waffles can be made at the weekend and kept in the fridge wrapped. They reheat well in the toaster.

Edited to say: if your kids are eating well the rest of the time, I wouldn't stress too much. Maybe give a smaller bowl gradually and supplement with toast etc

  • If your kids are used to sugar puffs I am not sure they will "buy" the puffed wheat. My mum used to give us that and said it was "just like sugar puffs" if you add sugar. Well it's not.
Still makes your wee smell though:o .

    It's only a game

I tried them with Granola but they found it too crunchy.

I agree with what Thriftlady says about cereal which is why I am looking for alternatives. One of them will eat toast, poached eggs, bacon etc for breakfast but the younger one won't as he doesn't really like eggs. He really loves his cereal. I am going to give the puffed rice a go as he might well go for that.
  • Following on from the 'nutrition' thread the first thing I would suggest is not to rely on breakfast cereals every day. Vary breakfast as much as possible and include protein such as eggs if possible. eggy bread is another that can be added to thriftlady's ideas.

The second idea would be to wean them off coco pops to a wholegrain cereal including porridge by serving it with hot cocoa (NOT hot chocolate) preferably without sugar. 'special chocolate porridge' might be acceptable while ordinary porridge isn't.

Cocoa was on on the list of daily foods in the OS household. Cocoa is a secret superfood with loads of antioxidants and is an excellent source on minerals especially magnesium which is necessary in our diet and works with calcium, potassium and vit D. Most people are short of this essental mineral
