I guess you're replying to me, if so, are you implying that no one but Microsoft offers support or help in fixing bugs? Because I've found Open Source support to be excellent and helpful.

Is this another one of your brilliant assumptions? Just because there's only a handful of us posting doesn't mean there aren't many more other people (you know: other people) reading. This is not a friends-of-little-john forum, it's for everyone. Stop being selfish.

And I see the same old tech threads pop up, what's this, how can I do that, etc. Should we now ban all duplicate threads ever? The advice obviously stays consistent. A doctor doesn't stop bothering to give advice just because someone else asked about the same thing. If you went to an expert for help and they just said someone asked me that earlier so I won't bother telling you, what would you think of them? It is the nature of helping with tech problems to deal with similar things repeatedly. If that makes you angry, then it isn't for you.

So do enlighten us about these "features" that make it impossible for any business (by virtue of just being a "business" no doubt) to use Open Office instead of MS office. Vendor lock in is not a good reason, let alone a good "feature."

1, The tech forum is a subset of moneysavingexpert.com.

2, What do you think the term "best value" means? You have in your own defence, argued against yourself. No one can be this stupid. So, are you just trolling?

3, Why shouldn't people get advise on how to save money, what have you got against people saving money?

And can you guess why this place is called moneysavingexpert.com and not techexpert.com? Seeing how the OP is a new poster and he mentioned money, it's a very good assumption that he came here to save money and not just for tech advice alone. Otherwise he'd obviously be at a windows forum asking about getting hold of a MS office 2003 copy. Think man, think!

And yet the description you gave contained the term "best value," do you really need a dictionary for such a simple term?

Where did he say that? In his last post he says, and again I directly quote: "I posted to make sure I didn't waste any more money - ie, 'saved' some money in the future." So, now what for your ridiculous series of completely baseless assumptions? Will this be a lesson to you about jumping to absurd conclusions and berating helpful people, when you fail at "reading between the lines?" Sadly I think not.

1, So, you shouldn't have to explain anything, is your opinion above everything? Well, aren't you full of yourself? All hail the great little-john-who-knows-everything-and-can-never-be-questioned-by-mere-mortals!

2, Customers? So, that's how you see the people who come here, as customers for Microsoft products? Are Microsoft products all you know about?

3, You didn't just say. You stomped on a helpful person to just mention an alternative. You lost your temper and are now feebly attempting to rationalise. You can now not understand how anyone would question your opinion.

And that's all that matters, even when we're trying to help others: it's how frustrated you, personally get, forget everyone else, right? Wow, that's an incredibly selfish attitude, and a sad thing to see on a forum dedicated to helping people. If you don't like repetition, if it makes you angry, then you're not going to like helping people with tech issues. But that is not our problem, it is your problem!

All this bickering is of no use to the person asking advice - calm down children and stop throwing the rattle out of the pram.

The OP was specific about the version required so why put something forward that will not do what is required?

You are making the following assumptions:

1, What the OP wanted. You were completely wrong with regards to the main thing he wanted: which was to save money. And you were completely unhelpful to him in that regard.

2, That no one other than the OP matters on this board. There are plenty of other people who read these threads, this is not some private one-on-one Microsoft consultancy exchange, like it might be at your own personal workplace. Can you prove that no one else reads this?
Would you advise a farmer who needs to tow something off road to buy a car without 4 wheel drive?
That analogy is way off the mark here. I might suggest the farmer use a cheaper 4 wheel drive. You would then be the one to get angry at anyone not recommending Ford alone for every farmer.
but it will be cheaper just won't do what you need it to do.
Why exactly? You keep on saying this as if it's a self evident truth. Just because something is expensive, doesn't automatically make it superior. Software isn't like theology, Microsoft is not the one true religion just because a high priest said so.
Regarding support you will need to use the many forums for help with open office that are around in the hope that someone will pick up your post and help fix the problem and send you the patch. As the software is free there is no requirement for anyone to provide a solution. With Microsoft office there is a contact who have an interest in solving a problem or bug you may find.
But Open Office offers a whole, active community of people to help out. As do any, of a very large number of Linux sites. Microsoft's own support comes at a great cost. What is so special about MS support that it's worth a staggering amount of money? Many businesses find it very difficult to keep up with such charges, especially for multiple computers. Documents, whether for university or business can be made in OO for free. Edit: Oh, and you can get paid support for OO, if you really want it: http://bizdev.openoffice.org/consultants.html

Was that the only thing about MS office that you consider worth the large price tag?
My reference to customers is regarding my work life, If I turn round and tell my customers who demanding software to go buy a £400 pc from dell rather than the £1800 custom built machine they really need and ask for just to save £1400 yes it may eventually do the job requested of it but take a lot longer so the £1400 saveing actually costs them money over the extra time required to do the work.
Again, you are making baseless assumptions that people need to pay thousands of pounds more to get what they want. You constantly assume this regardless of everything? This is against the attitude of the web site. How can you possibly stand money saving experts with the attitude that more expensive always means better? Do you yell at everyone that suggests saving money, because there might be a small possibility that it might not be absolutely perfect? You can't just assume that because your own personal customers don't use OSS, that it's useless for every business. Let alone that it's worth stomping on people who even suggest it to anyone.
If i cut corners my customers will find an alternative.
Cutting financial corners is a cornerstone of this web site. Why do you hate that aspect of MSE? I just can't understand why you're here and why you feel justified at unreasonably berating people who just tried to help. Get that? We're not paid to do this, we're just helping for the sake of it and do not deserve scorn for it.

I didn't know about Open Office so thank you for that information.

I also didn't know what !!!!!! means, I have just worked it out now, thank you. It would be more useful to me if you would say exctly why you don't like open office - I've looked at the site, and can't work out whether it is easier to use than MS Office 2007 when one has been trained in MS Office 2003.

I'm getting used to Word in Office 2007 now, especially since someone told me to save documents I wanted to send to people as .doc rather than the default, .docx, which means that half the committee won't be able to open their minutes.........

Had trouble finding the Save As button so that I could do this - eventually found it's located as a drop down from the coloured button in the top left hand corner.

Still missing the Edit - Select All option, for highlighting a whole document. Any suggestions anyone?

    Ctrl-A will select all.

Take a look at this to give you some structured training with the Ribbon, you'll find it much better after you've familiarised yourself with it. It doesn't make sense to be using drop down menus when your fingers are already on the keyboard, which is why the Ribbon is more efficient.

If you've got some spare time then there's some good tutorials on the internet for free that'll at least get you on the basics of touch typing.

I think the whole point of the post was that they didn't want a pirated version?
