Money appeared in my account

Options
Ten days ago I bank a £1,000 cheque in my account.
The clerk must have keyed in £3,000 by mistake.
I can see a little red fellow with pitchfork and little horns hovering over me and he advised me to close my account and go elsewhere.
Now I am tempted to make a runner with the money.
What the consequences will be?
I don’t really care if the bank is on loss, however I don’t want the cashier to be in trouble.

Thanks for any advice

If you care about the cashier being in trouble then don't do it cos they will know at the end of the day...

You obviously not bothered about the 'stealing' aspect of things..

It is only a matter of time before the bank traces the mistake as the till won't balance at the end of the day. When I worked at a building society (many years ago) I heard of people hurriedly closing their accounts after a mistake in the hope that way they got to keep the money. It never worked as the money does not belong to you legally and they always persue it.

Stealing? Hah!! From a bank? Certainly I am not bothered about “stealing” their stupid mistake. The same way that I do not bothered making a profit from stoozing their credit cards.
I loath them from the pit of my stomach. In my eyes banks are not better than robbers anyway.
If I can make a runner with impunity then my only concern is the cashier.

Well, if your attitude is that stealing is OK, then don't expect help from this site.

Ray I am not usually looking a free horse at the teeth.
According to many people the “bank charges” is stealing as well.

Yes, the banks are thieves but 2 wrongs don't make a right.
Banks have always employed all kinds of 'legal' tactics to steal from us but it is fair to say your own tactics might be seen as illegal.
I sympathise with you cos sometimes i am sure most people here who are honest with themselves and not merely chatting to the gallery would be tempted to keep and hope they don't realise their mistake.

What has happened to you, is not the same as bank charges or stoozing, or any other way you think banks are fleecing you.

This was a mistake by the cashier, crediting you with more money that you are due. The cashier isn't the bank, she is an innocent employee.

Firstly it'll come back to the cashier, when she tots up at some point, and potentially cause her a lot of worry and grief from her manager. Or if it's passed that process, it'll immediately come back to you, and then at best they'll know you are dishonest.
