Hijackthis only points out any browser extensions/plugins etc. It could still be possible to have a trojan in the background that doesn't show up. I think it would be worth running any scans available just to be sure.

better safe then sorry ... the system did have some earlier " dodgy activity"

HJT does not scan the whole registry - just certain key areas. And Stinger only does 54 trojan variants ....

Anyway hopefully BigDunc can let us know if SVCHOST has stopped hitting 100% CPU ??

Well it's been a while. I finally made time to go through the various suggestions that people graciously made to help me.

I went through all of the initial steps in the thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269, none of which reported any virus infections.

I tried the http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ stinger program: it reported no problems.

I tried running the FixBlast and FixWelch tools provided by symantec, both reported no infections.

I ran HijackThis again (see below for log file) and fed it into the http://www.hijackthis.de interpreter. There were two entries not marked as safe:

Unknown service. (ALUSchedulerSvc.exe)

which is part of the Symantec LiveUpdate service, and

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B556B386-CDBA-4539-959D-F9483D5DFCEB}: NameServer = 193.38.113.3 194.117.157.4

which are my ISP's IP addresses.

During all of this, the svchost process was running normally. I restarted the Microsoft Update Service and the svchost process quickly went up to 99-100% CPU...

If it is linked to a problem with the update process instead of a viral infection, does anyone know how the update process works?

Check the Windows Update log file for errors. See post 24 for more.

All of the files in post #35 were checked against http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and came up negative. I will post the results of the windows log after some sleep.
