Is your firewall enabled? Has your hosts file got any unusual entries?

    http://ask-leo.com/svchost_and_svchostexe_crashs_cpu_maximization_viruses_exploits_and_more.html

Trend housecall leaves crap all over your hard disk when it's finished, good company, but bloatware.. It should clean up after itself when it's finished.

You could try this if none of the online scanners find anything, it searches for a select range of nasties/worms.

Here is the log file from hijack this, taken when the svchost was running at 100%. I will give some of the online scanners a go too and let you all know if I have any luck. Once again, thanks for your interest.

Fiscal drag, that's my problem. Too many people dragging on my fiscals.
  • If you paste that log here, you can get an analysis, it's not 100% correct though.

Do you get any errors in the update.log - there should be a clue there about what is failing, or at least a hex error code to lookup.

you could try deleting your wutemp directory.

If you have system restore enabled, you may be able to rollback to the point it started.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Nothing particularly worrying showed up.

Where can I find this log file?

That would be the same system restore that I disabled to run some anti-virus checks and didn't re-enable? If I re-enable now, can I still go back to a point in time before I turned it off, and if so, how?

    Thanks again,

    Duncan

and probably not! (restore points are deleted, when you disable it)

You indicate this scan didn't pick up anything untoward. It should have mentioned there was potentially something wrong with this file running on your system .........

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\cf90e529267ca119c39465c951264b3a\update\update. exe

It doesn't look right to me.

This file may not come up "bad" but it seems to be running from the wrong location.

    Go here….

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/

click the "browse" button and browse to……

    C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\cf90e529267ca119c39465c951264b3a\update\update. exe

….then click the "submit" button to upload the file.

Post back the results to this thread.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

I see you have Messenger Plus3 installed. There are indications that you have other unwanted items loaded originating from this.

I strongly recommend you uninstall Messenger Plus 3 completely from your system. At least until your system is running OK again.

    Download CleanUp! here….. http://www.cleanup.stevengould.org/ .......

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open HijackThis and click on Scan. Check the following 2 entries (make sure you do not miss either):

    O16 - DPF: !!6F6DBC29-7A0C-4AC0-A42D-10EC70678526} (Word Cubes Control) - http://mirror.worldwinner.com/games...be/wordcube.cab

    O16 - DPF: {AC2881FD-5760-46DB-83AE-20A5C6432A7E} (SwapIt Control) - http://mirror.worldwinner.com/games...apit/swapit.cab

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking “Fix checked”.

Reboot your System in normal mode.

Now see how your system behaves and let us know.

When we have your system running as it should you may think you want to reinstall Messenger Plus3 ..... this you can do but do NOT install any of the optional extas that it offers (especially LOP and Winstart).

When you have done all this post a new HJT log with the results of that Jotti scan AND information on how the PC is acting. Please detail problems you are still having.

I have had a tidy up based on the results of the previous hijackthis scan. I have fed the results (shown below) into the hijack this website and there are only two items not indicated as 'safe', those entries being:

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B556B386-CDBA-4539-959D-F9483D5DFCEB}: NameServer = 193.38.113.3 194.117.157.4

which are IP addresses for my ISP, and

    O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe

The latter file has been run through jotti's online scanner and proved negative.

I also checked the update.exe file using jotti's site and this came back negative too.

I have removed Messenger Plus 3 and the worldwinner .cab files.

I have not yet run cleanup, it isn't obvious whether there is an intermediate step where you can see what will be deleted. I'm comparing this with CCleaner, which tells you what it is going to do before it does it. Do they do the same job?

Note that at this stage I have Windows Update disabled. Do you think there is an alternate update.exe that should be running in place of the SoftwareDistribution sub-directory?

As a test, I have enabled windows update. As before, svchost CPU usage has gone from practically 0 to almost 100%. :wall:

If your using xp SP2 then reset the winsock entrys this is done by doing the following.

    Go to start Run,
    Type CMD click Open.

In the dos screen type " Netsh" Hit enter then type "winsock reset" it will then ask you to his Y for yes, reboot your machine and let us know how its going.

I'm at work at the minute so I can't do any more testing until tonight at the earliest, but can I add a word of warning to anyone with a similar problem who is following this topic. I tried running cleanup as suggested in an earlier post, but with only two options selected: Empty recycle bins, and Delete prefetch files. It started deleting a number of files that it should have been ignoring, namely those in C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\temp, which was quite alarming. From what limited experience I have gained from all of this, ccleaner seems more user friendly. Does anyone else have any views on this?
