What security do I need

  • I use:

Anti-Virus - AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic (scanning all the time)
Anti-Spyware - SUPERAntiSpyware (on demain scanning)
Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes (on demain scanning)
Firewall - Windows XP SP3 inbound firewall + Router

I wouldn't bother with a software firewall - read here for a discussion of why:

What happens if you got a new worm and only outbound filtering could save you? :p i don't see any harm in using a outbound firewall. Better safe than sorry :D

Common sense e.g. don't open email attachments from someone you don't know, keep your machine updated via windows updates etc.

I've been using PCs for 20 years and work with them everyday. Personally outbound firewalls aren't for me. If people feel safer with one installed then great. Worms today and all the other types of nasties can do a lot to get around a software firewall, inbound, outbound, it doesn't matter. To some extent I suppose it really depends on your attitude to risk. I'm happy with XPs inbound firewall and the NAT'd router.

You should also consider real time spyware protection.
Always follow the path of least resistance.

I like to stop certain things accessing the internet as well but yeah if they get around the inbound defenses chances are there gonna get around the outbound.

An ideal solution is to have a computer that acts as a firewall both ingoing and outgoing, so viruses can't interfere with it's functions and it doesn't affect performance of the other computers on the network. I keep all inbound ports blocked and most of the outbound ones too, saves installing software on everyones pc as well. And QOS stops people leeching all the bandwidth too. :p

My Norton Anti-Virus is telling me I need to renew my subscription. Do I really? Is the free stuff just as good?
I have Vista and a wireless router, Speedtouch.
