Good pub meals in Wrexham and surrounding areas...?
Hello all
Its my sons birthday on Sunday and we'd like to take him out for a meal. We thought a pub that does home cooked food would be nice - we don't want mass produced, pre-prepared rubbish like Wetherspoons type establishments. Maybe a carvery? Where ever it is it can't be too expensive  though. We are in the Wrexham area but don't mind travelling up to about 40 mins away...
I know I'm asking a lot but any suggestions would be welcomed as we don't socialise much so don't know any nice places.
Many thanks
SAM xx

Have you heard of Plas Hafod in Mold?
I used to go there a lot, it is a lovely family place, and quite special.

Ooooh some lovely suggestions folks! Keep them coming, we will decide it the morning where we are going.
The menu at Golden Groves looks lovely doesn't it? Plas Hafod looks smashing as well.
Cheekymole - do you mean the Wynnstay in Ruabon or the one in town? I've never been to either. I know a few people who go to the one in Ruabon and say its really nice but I always forget its there as the outside of it doesn't really stand out at all does it?
Cheers to you all I'll let you know where we've been tomorrow night.

C'mon, don't leave us in suspense! Where did you go and was it nice?
I need somewhere new to try. We always end up at The Beeches, the sole reason being that we know there are going to be plenty of highchairs available for the youngest.
Anyway, keep up the good work on Freecycle and help me get rid of my blinking exercise bike!!:D

Sorry to keep you in suspense

We went to the Golden Groves in Burton. It was really nice food and a super building. We went for the carvery at £6.95 a head and it was very good value. The food was home cooked and tasty and there was plenty of choice of veg (5 types), boiled + roast pots, stuffing and yorkies, with 2 types of meat from the roast selection. It was very busy when we arrived at about 12;45 but we got a table. I have to say the service wasn't wonderful - but I am quite prepared to believe it was just an off day, and they certainly weren't rude or anything like that. My little boy loved it and the food was good value and very tasty so I'd recommend it. They also do carvery through the week and do a special of 2 people for £10. Their menu sounds lovely and a bit `masterchef' but we didn't have starters, and I didn't see anyone with anything other than carvery meal. My son had warm choc fudge cake with ice cream - I think the ice cream may have been home made too. We didn't have puds (much too full!) so I can't tell you about anything else. I would recommend it though.
Likabu - If you are having no luck with the exercise bike, stick it in the database or the person in message 92 wants one... :j

Thanks for the link to the menu. Hubby and I popped in for a drink the other week ( he dropped his car at a friends garage just round the corner from there ). We were going to have a meal but didnt bother.
The menu looks lovely. Might have to pay a visit for Valentines day.0 -
It is nice there, my Mum lives around the corner (down one of the dirt tracks that surround it!).
It's great in the summer for children, sit out in the beer garden and they get to run round in the adventure playground or the ball thingy. If it gets cooler they put the patio heaters on - bliss!Brassic!0 -

.as a family we have used this pub over a period of about 10 years. we used this pub last year and our last meal there was pretty bad. we went again yesterday just to give them the benefit of our doubt and hopefully things may be better. how wrong we were. my wifes egg ham and chips at a cost of £7.99 included overcooked peas and what looked like cheap commercial chips. the ham was fatty. my carvery was bearable but nothing at all special. the childrens play area was in poor condition and looked neglected.
to be fair the owner is always polite and friendly, but the same cannot be said of his staff. when my wife was asked if the meal was ok when she went to pay she said "not really" and started to tell the barman of our problems in non offensive manner, to which she was told " i am not interested just pay your bill". i did not know of this until we left ,otherwise i might have had a few strong words myself. its a real shame that this pub has gone so downhill as ot used to be a really great place to take the kids but sadly cannot recommend anybody to go there. maybe they will get there act together soon but my family and a lot of our friends will probably never go there again. i guess its hard to get good staff these days.0
