I dont post on here often but this has been bugging me since it happened yesterday...
I have a 20 month old Choc Lab neutered male! .. he is adorable, VERY happy, bouncy happy go lucky kinda boy ..
We live in the New Forest so have so excellent walks, yesterday we took him out on a forest track where alot of other people walk and when it was quiet we let him off the lead for a run, ..... (his recall is good when we are alone BUT when he sees another dog he is off and goes "deaf") So i always call him back praise and clip the lead on ...
anyway walking back down towards the car on a busy part of the track cyclists people with kids etc he was on lead! Because he is just so friendly he wants to say hello to all he meets but some people dont like it so he stays on lead! ..
There was a couple walking towards us with a golden retreiver and 2 springers all off lead, anyway i said to my daughter to carry on walking, as our dog tries to stop to greet ...
the golden retreiver walked upto Bosun and instantly growled and went for him! .. Bosun yelped and we moved to get him out of the way and the retreiver came again! .. I said to the man .. get your dog away! .. to which he replied!
"oh hes doing it because your dogs on a lead! hes not aggresive! "
I said oh so growling and going for my dog is not agression then is it not! he told me to stop being stupid and i should have let my dog off !
Ok so im not expert and we do the best we can with Bosun
(whether its right or wrong i dont know)
But you would think, if you know your dog is like this around dogs on a lead then why not clip it back on its own lead until you have passed! ??????????????????
For all they know Bosun could have been onlead because he was an agressive dog!!!!!!
ggrrr sorry ... glad ive got that out of my system! ...
opinions advice etc would be welcomed
xx xx

its a bit of a nightmare somtimes! Just wish he wasnt quite so happy to meet everyone lol Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!0 -
Grrrr, people like this drive me nuts!!
They have no idea why Bosun is on lead! I'm sure if he was dog-aggressive they wouldn't want him off lead!
Unless I know the person/dog, I would always put my 2 (big, slobbery, bouncy Boxers) on lead; as I don't trust anyone else! There are so many numpty dog-owners around, I won't take any chances!0 -
I do find it makes me question myself tho! ... am i doing it right, what are those people gonna think if i cant call my dog back etc ..
so i just put him back on lead!
ggrrr this annoys me lolHoping to be a thinner me in 2010!0 -

So what? Lots of people's dogs have crap recall, and they still get let off lead! My two love greeting people, but have a tendency to rub themselves all over people, usually when they are soaking wet and covered in sand or mud. I'd err on the side of 'on-lead' any day, than trusting recall from an interesting object!0 -
I think the bloke was clearly in the wrong...not you! Don't let an idiot like that start making you question yourself.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25
% of house owned/% of mortgage paid off. July 25 - 38.82%/31.66%

Exactly what twinklie said - his problem, not yours. You were being the responsible owner. Bosun was behaving well, on his lead and under your control.
The other dog was aggressive, not responding to recall and not under the control of it's owner. Doesn't matter what the other bloke said - he was in the wrong, not you.
Don't let some daft owner make you question yourself and knock your confidence. You did everything right!
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.
Oi you lot - please

- you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

As Penny Watcher says:D
As I understand it the dog walking etiquette says that if you see a dog on a lead it is polite to either put your dog on a lead if you need to pass closely or keep it away from the other dog. Apart from that the law says that dogs must be under control at all times....to me, that includes not having a pop at someone elses dog
There are some very stupid dog owners out there, IME the easiest way to deal with them is to do as you did and then forget about them.0 -
what a load of toshhhhh he obvesly (soz about spelling) dont no what hes talking about, i have a black male lab, he sooooooo bouncy still when every he sees someone he thinks there there to play and other dogs im struggling to find somewhere to take him at the mo i live facying freids but theres lakes to and now he runs of for a swim, then jumps all over people so he just walks on lead then i play in the garden with him, dogs can be protective on a lead but that other dog didnt have any excuse , you have done the right thing hun keep up the good work, he will probley learn when he gets sued0
