Virgin Media Porting to VOIP

Hi all,

wanted to port my geographic number (01635) to sipgate however was informed today that they cant port VM numbers.

Anyone recommend a good (preferably cheap/free) voip provider which DOES allow ports from VM?

many thanks, dave,

The only free ones I know of in the UK are SIPGate and Localphone - I don't think Localphone does any porting at all.

Gradwell - http://www.gradwell.net/voip/singleuser/trial/ is not too bad at £4/month, and apparently they can port VM numbers. I haven't used their VoIP service but their Fax2Email service (with a number ported from BT) works well.

These people also allow you to port your existing VM number http://www.voiptalk.org/products/number-porting.html

    But www.voipfone.co.uk are cheaper

With Sipgate you could point your new number direct to your mobile. No line rental or call divert fee, calls would cost approx 10p a minute to recieve.
  • On their website, Sipgate say they can port VM numbers but when I emailed them, they told me they couldn't port mine for some reason (I'm in Bristol). However they issued me with a new local number (as opposed to an '0560' number available from the Betamax companies like VoipStunt, VoipCheap etc) so I just have to tell the world my new number (which can't go into any telephone directory, according to Sipgate). So far (after 1 day) I'm very impressed with Sipgate- free local number, free incoming calls, free voicemail (which includes a free email with the message as an attachment), web access to my account, including itemised call details. All very intuitive with plenty of help pages. I'm always suspicious of 'free' so if anyone can tell me what the catch is, I'd be very grateful.

If I could join in on this one, I'd be interested to know if anyone actually has experience of having ported a VM number to any VOIP provider. What companies claim they can do - even past the point of accepting the order and taking payment - to what they actually can do - is often different in my experience. I've been told I could and then it fell through a couple of times now.
