    right.

I posted this bang on 11, and lost it, so this will be shrter.

    1. Painting in decorating, in my view, is much of a muchness. Unless smeone I know knows one, then they'll all be just the same to me. Anything that makes you stand out could benefit you.

Questions that come to mind are:

    1. Does your being female make you any better / worse at painting and decorating than a male? (Or does it APPEAR TO?) I think you could potentially play on the female part, bring out some of the cliches about women being better at doing more than one thing / having better fashion / colour sense etc.

    2. Who BOOKS painter and decorators? Men or women? Men would perhaps be put off, women would perhaps find it a selling point.

Most letting agent staff are female, and if they don't have someone they use already, you might appeal to them too.

In short, it *might* be a selling point, but if so, you really have to push WHY.
So if you bring up the female aspect, you'll need to explain whay that's Unique, and BETTER.

    (PS, I'm a guy)

Leave your Hubby out of it!, Your Gender will appeal to the Lesbian community, who are more likely to prefer a tradeswoman.
Find your local Gay bar, there should be some free magazines near the bar, try advertising in them.
The only downside, is you may get chatted up a lot.

I know a female builder who specialises in doing work for only women, she has a large waiting list of work at the moment.
But she does live in Todmorden.

They always have offers for free business cards. My dad is a painter and decorator and I have made some cards for him on there before.

If you wait until you get the offer for free premium cards, you can get a good picture that has colour cards, brushes and tins of paint on. That just comes up at the side of your business card, with your details on the other side.

Looks good, and works out at less than £5 for the postage, for 250 good quality cards.

With the premium cards, they are also blank on the reverse, and don't have vista print advertising on them.

Be very careful of Vista print, watch out for little boxes that you have to untick so as not to be joined in a monthly payment plan for something.

Why do you need to change your signwriting, is you husband going to work with you. If you change your signwriting and then have to change your Thompson pages ads, or anything else, wont your old customers be looking for you in your old name. If you have a good name where you live i would leave well alone.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Many retired single women would prefer a woman painter and decorator, or a female plumber, sparks, chippie erc. Several female trades people are registered with my local Age Concern as approved contractors.

  • Hi everyone,

Thank you very much for all your replies. Very helpful

Like some said i have decided that i dont want to seem i am trying to make out im better because im female. I have decided to just use my full name on my van. That way people will see im female but im not making a massive point of it.

Nope the hubby has nothing to do with business!! NO way!!! It just had to be changed because it did have my maiden name on.

Have been on vista print for new cards too. Sooo much to choose from cant decide  lol

Hows business going for the trades people out there?? I am getting quite busy now ( for january anyway )

    Thanks again

    Lauren
