Restocking fee? Is it legal?

Bought a cable but the wrong kind and doesn't fit my laptop. Asked seller if i can return it or swap if they had another they said ok but you'll be charged restocking fee and postage. This was not mentioned in the terms of the listing. So can they do this?
Any advice welcome. Thank you!

Depends what the listing said, but seems reasonable if they didn't ,make any mistake. Maybe you could relist it.0

They don't have to do anything if it was your mistake; they have fulfilled the contract by supplying what you ordered. If they are gracious enough to take it back, they can do it on their own terms.0

isnt there some distance selling rules somewheremake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It's most certainly legal, perhaps the question you should be asking is whether or not ebay allows such a fee?
Under the circumstances I would say it reasonable though dependant on the % charged.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -

Not if the op ordered the wrong item, perhaps if they sought advice from the vendor as to compatability prior to purchase, but no mention of this.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -
What kind of cable could have possibly cost enough that it would be worth the fuss of returning??
Probably be better off listing it yourself than go through all that hassle0 -
not sure how it works on a online auction but certainly at my work we charge a 15% restocking fee is item sold is suitable for useLive in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!0

Seems reasonable if the item is not damaged - why should they be out of pocket for your mistake ?
They are showing a lot of good will by accepting the return at all, and the fee is probably just intended to put you off returning.0 -
They do not have to refund the return postage, and considering that you will need to send it back via Recorded Delivery, is it really worth the hassle?
How come you bought the wrong lead anyway? Surely you checked before purchase? We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0 -
Thank you all.
I only ask as i haven't heard of this before. I have returned only one item in 6 years on ebay, but maybe things have changed. The cable was advertised as compatible but it's not. Sorry, if didn't sound like this in the begining. Shouldn't they mention in the listing and terms of their policy that they charge such fees on return?
I will put the cable for sale but just thought to ask.
Thank you!0
