Kitchen Spot Lights

Options
I have been quoted £30 per spot to supply and fit chrome Halogen Low voltage lights in my Kitchen by an electrician. £180 for 6 lights.

I have been told that these are all "fire rated" and quote from electrician "not like the cheap stuff on screwfix".

Does this sound about right?

  • Sounds about fair to me.

Are they recessed or surface mounted ?

Have you considered doing it yourself?

I did my own, and I'm not an electrician.

Am I not right in suggesting that this would have legal ramifications ?

Involving everything from your life and buildings insurance, to the warranty on the product that you install ?

(No I'm not a contarctor by the way)

We have ten spot lamps inset in our kitchen ceiling and they are switched on / off all the time. The bulbs eventually blow.
Find out how much the repacements are (I now use Lidl or Ikea) and how easy it is to fit them.
We have also had problems with the fuses in our spots so check them out as well.

I think the latest legislation is that any wiring in your kitchen and bathroom has to be certified by a qualified electrician.

We have just had ours done (kitchen and bathroom) and are getting ours certified.

Also there are certain zones for ceiling lights that apply to areas near water so check that the electrician is installing the correct zone.

When we renovated our house we were looking at around £15 for each spot light + transformer - to buy only.

  • Certainly hope that this is not the going rate. We have an electrician coming tomorrow to quote for down lighters for the kitchen, 3 bathrroms, study and hallway. Will be sick if this anywhere near the price he gives. Will keep you informed.

We picked up 5 sets of downlighters in B&Q. Going to check if quality is okay before going to the expense of fitting.
  • The downlighters aren't the onlt thing you'll have to get. Spotlights also need to have fire tents above them. There about £10-£15 each! It is something to do with building regs.

I would love to do it myself, but wonderful PartP doesn't allow it.

It's a crazy situation - I can do anything in my own kitchen with gas but can not touch electricity. My view is that gas is far more dangerous than electricity, but not according to the Government!

    Rant over...
  • Price all depends on how much work has to be done.

    For example....

You live in a house with upstairs and down stairs. You want spotlights in the kitchen. This would mean cutting holes, putting in joint box at the existing supply cable, and then taking feed to 1st spotlight then linking out etc.

    Then,

You live in a house with no upstairs, and have attic space directly above kitchen, you'd do the same as before, but I'd be much easier. So you'd be doing less work in a way, so you'd charge less.
