Virus?

Been on a thread on here and couldn't shut it down. Everytime I clicked on the page to close it, it opened again and again. Eventually I had to shut down the computer completely. Seems OK now.

Any ideas?

It just sounds like it crashed but if you think its a virus please follow the instructions here to check.
download http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php install, update, quick scan and remove everything it finds and post the log file back here.

After download hijackthis http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/ Press "Do a system scan and save a logfile" after its finished it will create a logfile in notepad post the contents of it back here.

If it crashes you can CTRL+ATL+DELETE and go to processes and find the browser so internet explorer is ieplore.exe then click on it and press end process. It works better than trying to close it thought applications.

Thanks. Unfortunately my computer problems have got worse although I think that the new problems are unrelated. I can no longer access the Internet - my computer will not recognise my modem, either wired or wirelessly (sending this from work). I am also having problems with my display drivers - they keep stopping and then recovering. Also, the inital problem of page after page after page on Explorer opening continues (albeit with a message saying that I am not connected to the Internet!).

I did run an AVG scan and it found no viruses. No idea where to go from here. I have tried reinstalling the router to no avail. Tonight I might try system restore, see if that works.

If anyone has any simple instructions for my multiple problems I'll be most grateful.

DONT do a system restore, as it sounds like your infected (AVG is cr*p at detecting these days)
Run MALWAREBYTES as Tom posted above and post the log file after its deleted everything it finds (Do a FULL scan)

You will need to download malwarebytes onto another computer and the database.
    Database here http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp

    Full instructions here
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from hereand just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

As theyre both 'missing files' and youve had a dodgy spyware proxy running on your computer (Which malwarebytes removed), id suggest checking both ebay and amazon accounts for any changed information as well as your bank statements and paypal statements for any suspicious activity

Make sure you run superantispyware too

Right, I have fixed the two you suggested and have checked on line bank accounts - they are OK. I never use E-bay so that is OK and Amazon appears fine. I am running the superantispyware.

I am really, really grateful to you for your help. One last thing - what can I do to prevent this happening again? I am particularly nervous as I bank online.

    Thanks again.
