Please help!! TV/Aerial problems

hi,

I have tried so many different aerials now and I not sure whether its ME (whose is really useless with all technical stuff) or that the aerial is just inadaquate.

I have tried all the cheaper options ... so I went to maplins and bought this

I couldn't get anything with it placed at the side of the TV so I hung it up on the window handles and hey presto I managed to get some random channels (kerrang) and bbc1 and channel 2, the picture was pretty damm good. I am using a digi box too (I dont want to go through all this again when the analogue is switched off).

However, then it started freezing periodically and eventually froze completely. My BIL said this may be due to bad weather but it was only drizzling . I retuned it but it happened again after 10 mins or so and since this is supposed to be the most rained upon university city then I need to sort something less changable.

I returned the aerial and got an exchange for another which was completely useless .... it was supposed to be better than the one I had but somehow I got even less channels so today I got this

I asked for a high-gain aerial and the guy in Maplins didnt seem to have any idea what I was talking for and said that was the best they had ....

However, again it wouldn't let me have normal channels just Kerrang and Dave etc as well as radio. I have checked my freeview reception and apparently I should be able to receive everything. I am not that far from Winter hill, but I have a downstairs bedroom in a shared house - everyone else manages to get a signal fine.

Its a rented house and I am pains to not inprove his house for him at my cost.

  • Ask landlord for all amenities to what you are entitled to including an aerial point......?

I may be compeletly wrong with this - but i believe it comes under the human rights act that (in the uk) bbc channels must be accessible, i know this doesn't work as the bbc is paid for by the licence fee (i recall a case in civil courts where a law student won a case against the bbc for the demand for a licence fee, under human rights laws - i.e. free information should be available to everyone regardless). This could at least be an argument for your landlord to sort something out.

Either way- have you tried an aerial booster yet - they do work if your getting bad signal, but if your not getting any - obviously it wont work.

You need a roof top aerial or at least one mounted outside on a wall pointing to the transmitter. The reason its freezing etc is because the signal you are getting is weak. Digital signals are much more weaker than analogue

I have checked online and on the renting and selling board and it seems its tenants liability to sort out a signal for a tv. Though you would think in this day and age it would be classed as a basic in a rented house but no its not!!

lol :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: how fast do you reckon my LL would want me out if I tried this one?!?!

I am already paying £29.99 for the blinkin aerial, I think I will have to get the boaster from elsewhere than Maplins as its not near where I live anymore, I dont drive and theyre *really" unhelpful nowadays it seems, honestly the guy I spoke to today couldnt stop suppressing yawning! Any suggestions for places to go??

I live in a poor signal area. I found a fantastic indoor aerial. Try it. I got it in Argos for £10. It's the Telecam TCE2000 wideband indoor aerial.

Good luck, tho' I somehow doubt that any indoor aerial is going to work properly for you.

Its strange that I seem to be the only one having problems.... people have mentioned on here and others ive spoken to that they have lived near by and never had problems .... I'm at PR1 and it doesnt seem to be far from Winter Hill even!
