Do they have to be 100+ words long? I've just realised that most of mine are just under 100 words, like 90ish!!

Once you've written enough reviews to qualify for the voucher our quality control team has to check them for quality and length

Yes, they do, and they will be checking.
  • I've held back on this because I have a tendency to speak up and then regret it... but I wanted to say that I agree with Mattygroves about writing longer reviews. I did the Amazon challenge, and most of those were a few hundred words, I was worried about a few which only just made it past the 100 word mark (or was it 150 words, can't remember), but they were accepted ok. They were only a handful.

I think all my reviews for this latest challenge are long-ish. But I think that's better for the site. I don't want to just scrape by writing 101 words, I want to put in the effort and be appreciated for it.

I do worry that if too many reviews are not up to scratch (and of course mine haven't been 'approved' yet so I can only hope they are), they will stop running the challenges, or they'll make the guidelines too strict.

Also, and I'm not accusing anyone here, it does annoy me to see a review of about six words - yes, I've seen them! That's really no help to anyone. I guess they must have had a challenge at some point where people got paid for writing anything at all.

Well in all my reviews I have made an effort with writing them. I take about 10 minutes per review, even if they are under 100 words or just over. I am really careful with what I say and do try to think of what I'm saying. I hope that my reviews are taken into account even if they are a couple of words under 100 :(
  • I'm sure they'll be fine. I wasn't getting at anyone on here, just a bit irritated by some of the really short reviews I've seen. Like I said, some of mine in the Amazon challenge were a bit short and they went through ok. I think, from reading round the site, the vast majority of reviews are only about 100 words. I guess I just didn't like the idea of people consciously and deliberately writing the absolute minimum just to 'get away with it'.

Wish I could do mine in ten minutes though!!! I take ages, and then I have to read it through again to make sure it's ok.

Tell me about it! Here is the actual complete text of a review on a Chinese takeaway - this review stopped mine from being a first review:

this is a good chinese in the area. they do deliver. the price is good. have a look your self.

    Boy, that's helpful. NOT.
  • I feel your pain. I noticed one review today where they have taken a shop in one location, about 10 miles east of me, and replicated that same shop review 20 miles west in a location where I know it doesn't exist. And the review wasn't that good in the first place.

On a more amusing note, I checked farm shops near me, thinking that I would probably have been to them. Both turned out to be branches of Farmfoods...

I checked some of my reviews with Word, and they average between 150-250 words, so hopefully will be ok. I am now up to 97/100, counting new reviews as two, so I should be done tomorrow. Phew! Have also made sure that I am rating the existing helpful reviews as I go - at least we can do our best to endorse the good ones.

Hollyberry and Scaredy Cat, I agree with you totally - thankfully, I haven't had any of my first reviews blocked by a one liner, but I know that they are out there.

I always mark previous reviews as helpful if I think they are - I think it's nice to thank the reviewer in that way - and I also update the review if I know that the shop/place has changed its' policy, opening hours, or whatever...

My reviews for this challenge are much longer, and IMO, much better than the ones for the Amazon Challenge, but that has come with experience...!

I've got 4 more reviews to write for my Virgin voucher, but I do continue to review places even when there isn't a challenge on - I think that Qype are extremely generous with their offers, so it's only fair to repay them a little bit.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

  • If you think that the one line review is not helpful and the person is just writing rubbish for the sake of getting their numbers, report them.
  • I get really annoyed with the one line reviews and it is so unfair when they stop yours being a first review. Most of my reviews are between 100 and 200 words. I also think that so long as a review is good and not just padded out with loads of words then if it is over 100 words then that is fine. Definitely report the reviews that are ridiclously short as it is them that are bringing the site dwn. There is also a group on the site called Qypewatch to discuss those such reviews.
