Which speed package are you getting from Virgin?

The above routers are fine but they are all rated up to 54Mbps (which is usually fine), but with Virgin rolling out their 50Mb speeds, you may want to look at an 'n' standard Router and give yourself a bit more future proofing in case you move up to 50Mb speeds later.

Technically a 'g' (54Mbps) router will be fine for the 50Mb package, but you never get those speeds in reality.

I'm not recommending this one as I have no experience of it, but I found this one for £40 after a quick google

Hi,

You won't be able to use the Sky wireless router as it can only be used on an ADSL connection not a DSL connection like Cable virginmedia. Also Sky have hacked about with the firmware on their wireless routers.

Just a quick sidenote, if you have been with Virgin Media for over a year I threatened to leave and they sent me a free wireless router.

You can try but i believe whatever deal they come back to you with will tie you into another 12month contract, if your happy to do that its worth a try.

You need a cable wireless router and sky is using the telephone wire. No use. Is your phone line with cable or sky?

The problem going for an 'n' standard router is that the standard has not yet been ratified, which generally means that all equipment needs to be made by the same manufacturer to be 'n' compatible. e.g. generally no good if WiFi is built into a laptop and a different make of router is used.

Er no! The actual normalized maximum achievable throughput of 802.11 'g' is less than half of the 54Mb quoted, at approx 19 Mb due to handshaking, control packets etc.

802.11N has not been ratified but the equipment spec's wont change, once ratified any changes will be carried out via firmware. So dont worry about buying "N" routers or wirelss cards they will be fine.

How is going for a 'g' spec router going to get the most out of a 50Mbps Virgin connection??

I also mentioned you will never get 54Mbps speeds out of a 54Mbps router.

Technically it is not suitable for a 50Mb connection and it would severely limit the throughput. Your sentence above is incorrect and ambiguous!
