Please can you help
We have a new wirless ready pc (Hp pavilion slimeline) virgin want £50 to send the stuff needed to get wireless internet access. Our internet is supplied via cable rather than the telephone line.
I already have a box from sky with sky wireless router, a yellow cable and a gray cable. Also have a card with a network key number, ssid number and channel number (what ever they mean) Is it possible to use this router and save a bit of money.
Our current internet service is from cable with the cable into a modem then from this a lead suppling power and a gray cable which conects to the pc.
Can I use the sky router or will i have to buy one from virgin or can i buy something else.
We have never connected the sky wireless kit up so it's never been used. I still want virgin to supply the internet access.

I use a Belkin wireless router on a Virgin cable internet modem. I'd try the Sky one first.0

Oh thanks I've made a note of that.
I haven't got a clue what goes where. Doea the yellow cable go from the modem with the gray cable going from the router to the pc and then i presume i don't require the gray cable?????:oKind Regards

Do you have a virgin modem. If I remember correctly, the sky router doesn't have the option to do bridged mode, but for less than £50, you can get a superb linksys router, which last for years.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

Doesn't Sky use the phoneline to connect? If so, you won't be able to use the Sky modem with the cable connection.
As for the leads: grey lead is most likely the telephone connection lead, and the yellow lead would be an ethernet cable (for wired connection to a PC).I have no signature.0 -
If it's near to the PC, use a wired connection rather than the wireless one. Wireless is handy, but wired is preferable if convenient.
Oh well worth asking

Is something like the above Ok?
Yes at the moment a wire one is fine but my OH wants to be able to connect his works laptop so he can run the two at the same time. (he's no idea about computers so can't help)Kind Regards

A much better buy would be http://www.microdirect.co.uk/(6996)Linksys-WRT54G-54Mb-Wireless-Router-with.aspxUbuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

We had all sorts of problems with virgin last year in a student house because of a router.
Is the sky router a cable one? If not it will not work. We ended up buying a cheap (£25) router from argos in order to make it work. I think it was a belkin wireless one but you can get wired ones even cheaper0
