o2 3g sim card - how can I tell if it will work in my phone?

I would appreciate your help please. If you have an o2 3g SIM card, what specification does the phone have to be for it to work (only using calls/text/GPRS/o2 active)?
How can you tell if a phone is 3g (ie what do you look for in the specification?Before anyone states the obvious, if it does not have 3g indicated anywhere
).
Will an o2 3g SIM work in a non-3g phone?
