Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Freesat is a satellite service from the BBC.
Humax sell a Freesat PVR, ie twin tuners and harddrive, for about £300. It also has HD capabilities.

Hmmm....£300 is rather a lot of money when I can get a Sky+ box for £99 plus £60 installation. I was hoping to save myself some money, not end up paying more :) Are there any benefits of a FreeSat box over Sky+ that would account for the huge price difference?

The big difference is that you do not have to pay Sky to use it's recording facilities.

    It is a " one-off " payment.

I understand you balking at the upfront cost. But the thing to remember is that no longer having to pay money to Sky soon pays it off.

Consider. A year of Sky+ (with movies but without sport) costs us £456 in subscription.

To upgrade to Sky HD would cost us £99 for the box, plus the £60 installation fee, plus £120 a year for the HD surcharge, plus that same £456 a year for the subscription.

For the first year alone, that costs £735; thereafter £576 a year.

So, three years of continuing Sky+ would cost us £1,368 (if the subscription doesn't rise again).

Going Sky+ HD for three years would cost us £1,887.

And, thereafter, we'd have to keep paying £456 a year (or £576 a year for Sky HD)

Whereas, buying a FreeSat HDR box would (will) give us television including HD, via satellite, that can do all the things that a Sky+ or Sky+HD box can (live pause, chaseback, etc.) for £300 plus nothing.

Mine's on order and Sky is in for an expensive lesson in the counter-productivity of being greedy.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

OMG...... I have a very basic package (£17.50 per month, no movies, no sports) but even that adds up to £210 per month and I can't record anything. It would take me just under a year to break even if I bought the FreeSat box (would not need HD) which is not bad, but I just haven't got that sort of money at the moment. It is definitely worth bearing in mind (in case I get a windfall) and then I can tell Sky where to shove their box, but until then I might just stick with Sky basic. Shame :(
