Buying Applecare from ebay

Hi,

I need to buy applecare for my mac as the 12 months is about to run out. I don't want to buy instore as it's soooo expensive so I was looking at ebay. Though it i cheaper I'm a bit worried about the sellers e-mailing me the code instead of posting me the physical box with stuff in.

Has anyone on here bought applecare from ebay and does it work? I'm just worried because I don't want to be fleeced!

It may be expensive via Apple but you know it's legit. Like any form of insurace it's no good until you need it, and then you find out if it was worth it. If your Mac is so important to you do you want to take the risk?

The main seller on there has 32 negative and 36 neutral comments this year, looking through them it suggest you are buying a US applecare product. Looking at the T&C of the apple care US Versions of Applecare are only valid for the US. If you had a mac book you could understand it may travel but Apple will know by your serial number of the computer and the serial number of the Applecare plan and they may not tie up and declare it void.
It looks like it will be a mail in service as theres no way you'll be within 50 miles of a US based service centre, whereas a UK plan would get someone sent to you as long as you live withing 50 miles of an apple service centre.

Don't misunderstand me I think Apple charge way too much for there service plans, but it's a monopoly and they know it.. Remember if it's too good to be true it probably is.

Apple charge $249 for a Mac Pro in the US, (Thats around £167 at the currect exchange rate) £195 for the UK product and it's selling on Ebay (memory mate) for £60. I know there is markup on items but that just looks way too cheap to be legit to me. It also looks like he's in the US and trying to make it look like he's in the UK.

I got a boxed one from a cex type shop for £40. I have the email certificate acknowledging the extended warranty and Apples website shows the machine covered until the end of 2010 as well

I have always bought Applecare on eBay.

But I only purchase it boxed and sealed from British sellers.

The last two that I got this way cost me £108 and £100, respectively. They were for MacBooks Pro. Apple charges £273 for those.

I've never had any problem doing this: you just ring the Applecare telephone number and furnish them with the serial number of the Applecare (which is inside the box) and the serial number of the Mac to which you wish to apply it. Applecare then gives you a registration number and emails you confirmation that your Mac is covered until the appropriate date.

That information is stored on the Apple registry and can be confirmed at any time.

I would never, however, buy Applecare from someone who is only intending to email the serial number of it "to save postage". I always and only buy it in a sealed box and pay for it with PayPal, so that it is covered against fraud.

The only time I would ever buy Applecare from Apple would be if I was purchasing a new Mac and a new monitor at the same time, because, under those specific circumstances, the Applecare then covers the monitor as well as the Mac.

i bought applecare on my imac from apple... wouldn't dare buy anything like that from ebay, but that's just me and my old fashioned ways..

Thanks. I've had a look at the website and it's £120 for macbook cover I think.

I've just phoned applecare and enquired if a friend in the US wanted to buy me applecare as a present would it be valid on my UK macbook. Man said yes as the warranty is global. I wouldn't need to supply a receipt either as proof of purchase.

Next time buy it when you buy the MAC as it's only £40 or £50 at the time.
