Are you trying to connect wirelessly or are you using the ethernet cable?
You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.
  • Hi do you know what broadband provider he is with?

You should be able to get into the router directly by going to http://192.168.0.1/ in your web browser. There will usually be a password prompt, if he's a sky subscriber the u/n will be admin and the password will be sky. If not a sky user try admin in both fields.

If you're successful in logging into the router there should be a Modem status and Downstream connection speed - let us know if there is any read-out (and what it is).

If you can't get into the router (due to incorrect username/password) then let me know what lights are showing on the front of the router.

OK to reply to first post I'm trying to connect wireless it picks up router and shows LAN connection but will not connect to internet,

now to second post i will not be able to get that info till tomorrow sorry but i do know he is with virgin media, the modem is a Motorola surfboard, and did manage to get into router wired up with admin and password.

what is correct way to get the following
IP Address xx xx xx xx xx
Subnet mask xx xx xx xx
    Gateway xx xx xx xx

    DNS
    primary xx xx xx xx
    secondary xx xx xx xx
  • The easiest way is to click the Start button in windows and click 'Run', type in cmd and click OK.

In the command prompt that appears type in ipconfig -all and press enter. This will give you all the information stated above.

Referring jack's post, the ideal test would be to get this working on wired connection first. Was the connection fine with the router provided by Virgin? - if he still has it can he connect it again and see if its still working? I know you may not be able to find this out now.

EDIT: You shouldn't need to manually enter a subnet mask/gateway/etc this should be derived automatically.

i have had router working wile connected with modem fine, just wireless after the setup cd has finished it says ''your wireless router is now ready to use'' and it all looks fine full signal the lot but ni internet also i have never had to manually enter ip address or anything like this on previous routers but this netgear wont allow me to proceed without this info for some reason. also it came with a usb adapter for wireless and it wont even connect with this.
  • If you give me the model number i'll have a little look at the the spec.

Have you tried clicking the little wireless icon in the bottom right of the taskbar in Windows, should look like a computer with a radio wave coming out of it.

Really, the CD should just install the drivers that run the router, the rest should all be handled by Vista, so for it to ask for config details directly seems off - is this the software that came with it that's asking you or windows itself?

i believe the spec is a WRN2000 although the description on line is a Netgear WNB2100 Wireless N Router and USB Adapter Kit, and yes it was the setup CD that asked for info, it said that setup has detected that it has a static ip address and gives to options continue with static ip address setup or other option which i tried but keeps reverting back to static ip address setup, and yes i have looked at icon in taskbar this laptop has some bars for signal strength when cursor is hovered above it and its a picture of 2 computer screens when left alone.

this link should show you router

  • The best I can leave you with until you can check on his machine is to ignore the Netgear CD and click it. You only need the drivers from it (which would be the first thing it installed).

The problem may will be with the wireless card/adapter on the laptop itself. The best way to check this is to double click on the windows taskbar icon in the bottom right and you should get a screen that lets you search for/refresh a list of available wireless networks... if when you open this dialog you see at least one available connection then the laptop side of things is fine. This may help when you get chance to try again http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928429

EDIT: Regarding the router itself ... the following lights should be on...
    1. the top one (obviously) this is the power light
    2. the second one (looks like an i with a 'swoosh' underneath) - which idenifies if the router itself has an internet connection
    3. the third one down, this shows that the router it ready to transfer data wirelessly.
    4. If you have the router wired to anything then the numbered lights may also be lit.

this is going to be a dumb question but have you rebooted the router and modem since setting it up? Virgin seems to want a reboot before it'll work no matter what you do, connect it to a router, dust the modem or sneeze more than twice.
