No baby seats in Spain - Canaries?

We are off to tenerife in a couple of months, and having spoken to friends/ family who live out there it seems that they do not use baby seats in cars there, is this correct??
We will be travelling with a 21month old, and will need a taxi from Tenerife South to Torviscas. I was talking about it today, to see how we would go about getting a taxi with a baby seat, but have been told there is no such thing and babies are just strapped in on parents laps there.
Is this right? Apparently its only a 20min taxi ride but the thought of it terrifies me. Surely it isnt safe at all or it wouldnt be illegal here??
We are looking at the posibility of driving to stansted, is it possible to take our own maxi cosi priori xp seat with us on the plane? Its bloody heavy and would be a lot of hassle, but is this the only option we have?

It makes you wonder how any of us who were children before baby seats were introduced in the UK managed to survive.0

Probably the same way as all those people who didnt die before seatbelts were invented.. would you not wear one now though?0

I wouldn't care how much trouble it is, think of how much trouble it'd be if you went without it.... and then ended up in a situation where you needed it!
Airlines are always banging on about safety issues being paramount, can't you contact them and ask what their policy is? I hired a car in Rhodes a few months ago, on the rental form was a question as to if I required a child seat, I'd have thought Spain had the same policy, that's what the EEC is all about isn't it?0 -
I thought it was all the same rules everywhere, but I dunno.. can only go with what im told.
We will need a taxi from the airport, rather than a hire car so I guess the only option if they dont have a carseat would be to take our own.
There must be hundreds of families take babies with them to the canaries every year.. anyone any experience of this? What did you do?

Even in this country taxis don't have car seats for babies/children.
They can usually supply if you book & request them, but its not standard.0 -
We have never had a problem getting them when we needed them, just ask for one to be included when we ring up.0

Of course, but if you were at Heathrow in the taxi rank you wouldn't get one, thats what I mean.0 -
When we go away with our littleone we usually take a small lightweight booster seat. Better that than nothing as will be strapped in. I put it in the case and whip it out when we get in the taxi..I know that some airlines let you take a car seat as free just like the pushchair. Have a look in the terms and conditions0

Ah good idea trinny.. would these be suitable for a 21month old? My maxi cosi seat is so heavy!!
Have found this after a quick look..
Ryanair
Infant Equipment* (car/booster/travel cot) Fee charged per Item/ Per One Way Flight (1 pushchair carried free of charge)£10

As per Rainbow Butterfly, we've never had a problem, although we've not been to Canaries, just Balaerics & mainland Spain.
We've always just told them we need child seats & the ages of the children when booking, & the seats have always been ready & waiting in the taxi.0
