Have you tried BA's world sale? They fly direct to Tokyo from heathrow and if you register online at https://www.ba.com then you will get a customer discount of about £50. Bookings must be made by jan 31, but the flights can be up to Dec 06. Worth a look as I just booked for china and no travel agent could beat it or get near. All were £50 dearer.

( I know its a rail pass but also covers you on some buses I think. Make sure you buy this rail pass BEFORE you arrive in the country- see a travel agent and then your ticket is exchanged on arrival in japan for your pass)
My friend's sorting out a proposed itenary & I'll post it when I receive her ideas for the edification of the board:D:D

Where did you get your railpass from?

    Hi

I'm also going to Japan later in the year (June) and I'll be staying 7 nights in and around Osaka.

A really good place to get feedback is the 'Japan Today' forum, now renamed Crisscross, for some reason. It has a Travel specific section here. You'll need to register if you want to post.

By the way, I'll be visiting:

    - Kyoto (2 days)

    - Nara (beware of the deer! :D )

    - Himeji Castle

    - Kobe

    and, of course,

    - Hiroshima plus a side trip to Miyajima island

I'm really looking forward to my trip... :j

    Have fun!

I bought my rail pass ticket from a travel agent on the khao san rd in Bangkok as I was due to fly to Japan after Thailand. The conditions stipulate you must be a foreigner, and must have purchased this voucher/ticket prior to ariving in Japan. I was a bit worried about it all, but when you get there its easy enough to get your ticket validated, and travelling by the bullet train is something else.

You will find this helpful if you havent already looked at it; http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en001.html

Another poster ( sertav) just reminded that Himeji is the castle I was on about originally!
  • Visit a hot spa in Hakone. We always used to go to the Prince Hotel on lake Ashi. Very beautiful scenery, hot outdoors springs that you can bathe in and cable cars going up the mountain.

I can also recommend the trip to hakone. Take the bullet train from toyko central then buy a ticket for about £35 and this will give you a funicular train, cable car, and coach drive around hakone, its beautiful scenery just ignore the gravel pit site.

Shop at the supermarkets late when fresh goods are reduced, there are always plenty of free samples to try. The yamanote line is a good "ring road" train around tokyo. The trains are never late!!

And a final must is to visit tokyo fish market at 5 in the morning tons and tuns of fish being expertly carved with samurai swords, and believe me you will soon tell which of the fishmongers are most careless and around the market you get the best sushi in the world.
The best work is the cheapest as the quality remains long after the price is forgotten

    Cheers
