Do you need a BT line

Options
I'm on NTL so are there any other providers that I can change to. They all seem to say that you need a BT line.

An NTL cable line only allows you to use NTL's own broadband internet service.

For ADSL and the ability to have access to many different ISP's, you will need a BT line.

Sos, I've got broadband but was looking for someone a bit cheaper than NTL but it looks like I'm stuck with them without a BT line.

I think you should take a look at AOL. I got this from their website.
    AOL Broadband Gold
AOL is the only provider that gives you the choice to connect to a high speed broadband package via either ADSL or cable. AOL Broadband Gold is available at speeds of up to 2Mbps via ADSL or cable.

In the UK, the most widely available type of broadband service runs over a normal telephone line, and is known as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). ADSL is supplied by BT, and since the end of May 2002, it has been available to more than two-thirds of the UK population. AOL then supplies AOL Broadband services using this technology.

Broadband is also available via cable modem. In this case it connects the home computer to the Internet via a high-speed cable modem using ntl's cable network.

Whichever option you take, you will get the same high-speed Internet access and the same exclusive AOL Broadband content.

    ...and
    AOL Broadband Gold
To get AOL Broadband Gold you need to have either a BT phone line or live in an ntl broadband-enabled area. AOL Broadband access is also subject to local availability and capacity levels, survey and landlord's permission, if applicable. To check if broadband is available where you live, please use our availability checker.

....but it's £24.99, so doesn't fit the "cheaper" category. Sorry!

I seem to remember reading a report how one of the regulators is or will be looking into broadband access to the cable companies infastructure for other companies. If this goes ahead, it could mean that the cable companies MUST give access on their lines to other broadband suppliers.

I cant remember the specifics, but I'm sure this was the gist of the report.

You want to keep your fingers crossed that this goes ahead. It could mean that even with a cable phone line (NTL, Telewest), you will get a much bigger choice of broadband suppliers.
