Under control panel/security centre/windows firewall what are the exceptions listed? I have msn listed there (though in fact I have the windows firewall turned off as I use a router firewall). Just a thought that the box might not be ticked or you might need to list certain sites.rabialiones wrote:tools, privacy, advanced, i have first party cookies and third party cookies accept selected.Torgwen..........

hiya, everything was working fine this am as i could access the sites after numerous system restores and installing and uninstalling of avast antivirus a few times. i thought i had fixed the problem, however since this evening i have begun to have same problem again.
i have tried to go thru toxteth help topics, however problem is i cannot even access the sites from the links given in help topics, as i still get the same error message - 'page cannot be displayed'.
as to your suggestion to reinstall windows OS, i dont know if thats really necessary, as i dont think this is a major problem if only i knew how to solve it.
there must be a simple solution , its just that im not very techie minded and dont really like messing around with the computer too much , in case i make a drastic mistake.Nice to save.0 -
Had the same problem when I tried to get rid of AOL on my dell laptop. I suggest that you go to https://www.download.com/3000-8022-10227353.html and get HijackThis. Run the scan and there should be something there (at least one item) about Global Startup and AOL. Check the box(es) and click the box to fix. This removed the command in XP to try to start up AOL at startup. Worked for me and now AOL free (never used it anyways)rabialiones wrote:hiya, ive been going thru this thread with great interest. alls well for thumbs up when a problem has been resolved.
however,
what if problem has not been resolved???????????
i have been postin for about 2 weeks now , giving various titles and info about my problem, but as yet it has not unfortunately been resolved.
i have had some replies to some of my posts, but having followed the advice posted, the problem still remains.
PROBLEM:-
i am unable to logon to sites, eg. microsoft internet exp., hotmail, ebay, online banking, making purchases etc.
i changed my anti virus from avg to avast, everything ok for about 3 days after this.
i also deleted aol, (my previous isp), now each time i turn comp. on i get window saying, unable to locate aol companion xml file, please reinstall aol.
i think my problem may have started after i deleted this. can i install aol without signing on to it? as this may solve the problem.
i have tried system restore and gone thru all help topics but problem has not been solved.
i have read thru alot of threads to try and resolve this matter.
i have windows xp
any help would be appreciated
thank you
i have disabled avast and msn firewall and then tried to sign onto msn explorer, but i still could not sign on. the butterfly goes into motion then after 5 attempts it stops unable to sign on.
weird thing is that i can access msn thru i exp. but i cannot sign in to hotmail.0
