how are you trying to connect? via name or IP address?
i'm guessing the DVD / TV might not have the abilty to work off DNS and therefore may not be able to find a hostname. try connecting via the IP address of the PC and see if you have any joy.
  • It depends how much money you want to spend on NAS Drive.
I have tried several cheap and cheeeful one's but they all had different problems.
In the end I decided to buy an expensive one. A synology DS108J. What an excellent peice kit it has turn out to be!!

The PC has to have a program running. Think it's called" Home media network" it's required for the Windows to serve media to other devices on a network.

No problem: it was just a gentle nudge (now deleted) to remind you that quite a few others who had helped you in this thread had so far seen their kindness towards you unacknowledged. :)

Unacknowledged?? sorry but EVERY reply I have put on this thread started with the word "thanks" or "thank you".
So I don't think its correct that I did not acknowledge their kindness.
I am an active poster on other forums for disability etc but do not check if people thank me, I am just happy to help people!!

unfortunately it seems like the OP has unsubscribed from the thread to go and buy something that won't do the job.

No I havent unsubcscribed. I have now read the replies with other suggestions and will look at the ones that work. Unfortunately I was not aware that the suggestion made was not the right type, but thanks to the posters I do now.

I have not bought anything yet anyway.

thank you very much for all your replies

Aha, could be why then as not got anything "programme-wise" running on the PC to act as a server.

I will take a look and see, thanks.
  • a USB one wouldn't do the job. They need it to be networkable so its plugged into the router and can be accessed from anywhere
But it would if plugged into one of these - LINK £25 for the adapter - probably not quite as plug and play as OP would like - bound to be a few foibles

Unfortnately you ( and I ) just missed some 320GB Linkstations ( old stlye ) going for around £80 from ebuyer, seem to be clearing old stocks, unless anyone knows of similar deals
They seems to have moved to a new design now - pushing the multi meeja side of things LINK

As a price guide, the old style Linkstation Live 500GB was ~£100 from Amazon just over a month ago.
