Thanks but none of those options are really what I want. The desktop works fine and as we have just bought the laptop for our eldest son who is doing his A levels then we couldnt afford another pc or indeed have we got the space for two.

All I want is something simple to store photos on -which I thought the Iomega was. thanks
Hi, we had a similiar problem with our PC and we bought a MAXTOR 500GB USB External H/D from PC World for £59.00 just before Christmas. We're very happy with its performance and was very simple to set up. I'm not techie but even I managed it without any hassle. Have used it to store all my many pictures and it's certainly speeded up our PC.

one of these would work then

You 'could' have the same issue as with the Iomega one but you don't need to use the software. You may need the software to connect to the drive initially to set it up on the network but once its there you'd just need to map a drive to it on the other PC's.

thanks thats much more what I am looking for, the Iomega was 500gb though, our son has a lot of A level work to put in it so wonder if 250 is sufficient.

Someone at work told me that Buffalo make them, anyone know the make/can recommend??

Don't go with the Netgear SC101. I tried about 6 different hard drives and none work.
There's a specific set of hard drives which will work with it..

a USB one wouldn't do the job. They need it to be networkable so its plugged into the router and can be accessed from anywhere. With a USB one it'll either have to be transferred from 1 PC to another when needed or connected to one PC and setup as a shared drive. To set it up as a shared drive you'd need to give the right access rights to the PC and drive and also make sure the PC its connected to is always switched on.

The Linskstation Live series will also do what you want.
I have a Linkstation Live 500GB, works fine and have had no problems with it.
Also works straight out of the box.

unfortunately it seems like the OP has unsubscribed from the thread to go and buy something that won't do the job.

Ok, lets kickstart this thread again then as I am also looking for a network compatable external hard drive (I have a spare PC, but that will cost too much to run 24/365hrs a day) and want to store photo's, music and downloaded content (which I will use my PC to puton to the hard drive).

Looking for around 750Gb-1TB in size...

Also, I have a Sony blu-ray and Sony 4500 Series tv, any idea's how I can get it to see my files on a pc? It says "cannot find server". It is connected to the network amnd diagnostics confirm this too and I have updated the firmware for the blu-ray player.. My PC does see my tv via the network, but not the other way around...

    Just a secondary thought....

    Thanks in advance... ;)
