You can only return the goods within 7 days if they were bought over the phone, or online, and the were posted/sent by courier to you.

You have no rights to return the item if the item was bought instore, and you had changed your mind or it is a duplicate gift. ONLY if the item is faulty do you have the right to return it to the store.

Though some stores like Argos allow customers to return certain purchases within 16 days, it is at their discretion and can refuse to do so at anytime.

    .

But if something is missing or wrong with the item then the law says you are allowed a replacement or refund.

Most people either take something back either due to it being faulty or the items is not complete.

But if Argos did stop the 16 day money back guarantee then i think people would choose to shop else where and why argos keep it in place is to attract more custom.

Also most major retailers would let you change an item if it was a duplicate gift or unwanted , of course this is up to the discretion of the shop and would have to be returned in reasonable time frame of course , most will out of goodwill.
  • phone boxes are also opened to make sure items are all inside. what would your reaction be if you said no dont open the box, got home then found there was parts missing inside?

also ive never heard of the writing the imei numbers down in a book, an i was team leader for over 2 years! must be a store specific policy if they were having lots of problems with mobile phone related sales

the phone i bought was sealed via tmobile and would have not been opened in your store..
hence if something was missing i would be on the phone to their cs unlikley to have anything missing mind..

things are missing when they are 2nd hand goods are resold and not checked

also my issue was not exactly to do with the box being opened it was to do with the fact that the box was almost torn apart hence i then said another store carefully opened the seal and i wasnt bothered...

i myself have worked in argos and we have many stores in the area each stoere has diff systems some write the imei number of the phone bought some write the imei number on your reciept..

the imei number is also recorded for stock control..

once again why should innocent buyers be punished!!!!

Did you also know there was a big issue with theft at the warehouse where mobile phones were being opened then resealed?

Also i dont really see how innocent people are being punished...id rather have all my items opened to make sure they were all there than to find they had missing parts when i got home? If there is an issue with the opening when at collection, ask for a new one or if possible speak to the manager about it!

also i think the mod should move this to the vent part of these forums

Because i don't think its up to the staff to decide if its up to them to open your products , i agree i would sooner know if something is missing before hand but they should have the customer to open the mobile phone box and not choose to do it themselves and make a sloppy job out of it.

Plus once you have paid for the item , is this then not damage to your property? they should inform customers they need to be opened before they sell them incase it is a gift for someone.

Argos are not looking out for the customers here they are looking out for number one ,themselfs!

If Argos can spend time opening peoples new goods instore before they receive them , then why cant Argos take the time to check goods which are returned?

Staff are supposed to open all returned boxes and check that all the parts are there and it hasn't been used.

However this mustn't be happening in all stores. I recently bought a kettle which was in a scuffed box, and when I got home I realised it had been used and packed up again as there was water marks inside it.
Here I go again on my own....

I was just about to suggest this idea!

I am happy checking the products myself as I know I can quickly check for missing parts and make a neat job of it!

And how do Argos know nothing is missing in the first place? Those PSP memory cards are awfully small...

How will I ever forget that Christmas morning as a boy? huddled around the tree opening presents with my family, the joy on my Father's face as he received a new electric razor from my Mum, turn to disgust as on closer inspection it was covered with the scummy face feculence of the person who had used it and returned it to Argos, who then palmed it off as brand new!

Put us right off our brussels.......
  • how many times i dont mind if they have to open it but do they have to rip it so bad that it looks like you bought it from a boot sale!!!

you try telling a 13 year old that it is new when the box looks like its been sat on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely your not suggesting that us genuine shoppers should get punished for the few dishonest customers out there?

Surely its not that hard to figure out if the goods have been used or not or is that to complicated?

Do you really think that people return goods after having it for 16 days or less and not even opened it or used the goods?

Iam not saying that genuine shoppers should get punished for the few dishonest ppl out there. But staff do not purposely take back second hand goods. Do you think that we enjoy being called all the names under the sun from ppl that have recieved these said goods, because no we dont nor do we deserve it, just as much as you do not deserve to recieve second hand goods, i agree i wouldnt want them either but i can assure you its not intentional.
As regards to your comment about it being hard to tell it goods are used or not then no on some goods it is really easy on some not so easy. And returning goods after 16 days unused ,then yes ppl do just that especially after xmas. I was making a genuine comment about ppl bringing back used goods and saying nothing.Yes stores should check them but you have the times when ppl havent used them, and we open the boxes to get abuse, we cant win we are only trying to do a job thats all. As a company they dont want to get trading standards involved in anything but then some ppl thrive on trying to get one up on any company no matter who they are.
Please remember that we are only human and mistakes are sometimes made, they are not made to deliberatly antagonise the customers, but if errors are made them we get the abuse from customers in the end
