Many Tesco's and Sainbury's have coin machines where you can change up all your coins. Small charge is made but it might be worth trying.

    I hated handling change.

Hours of checking, double checking, weighing and then still finding out that you're 1p short. All under dual control, ensuring there weren't enough cashiers on so the queue just grew and grew.

My advice? Get the coin bags from the bank, fill them carefully and accurately and ask if the local McDonalds (or other retailer) would change them for notes.

It will probably save them money and you time.

Additionally, given the value of coppers these days, what's the point saving them? Pounds coins and £2 coins perhaps. But smaller denominations aren't worth the effort anymore.
  • I can't see what the big fuss is with properly bagged coins. I have a giant 2-3ft mock plastic coke bottle that I bank when it's half full or so.

I bag up the change and usually take in maybe 20 bags of change. In addition to the deposit slip I also include a clear, handwritten list of the number of bags of each coin type. I've found this sometimes helps the cashier figure out what's what and to quickly sort out how he's going to weigh & total them up). This is more useful in recent years as the deposit slips usually just have one row each for 'silver' & 'bronze'.

I've often been in & out of Barclays in about a minute. That's often less than a lot of other transactions going on!.

With Nationwide, I have heard of cases where if you approach them nicely you can sometimes make arrangements to bring in more than 5 bags. This is usually outside of the peak busy periods. Not sure how widespread this practice is though, or how flexible they may be.

Traditional banks are your best bet though. Have a word with friends/family you trust that might have an a/c. You could offer to pay it into their account at the bank (nothing to stop you paying it in on their behalf - after all the deposit slips do have a box for 'paid in by') and then get them to transfer it to you or write a cheque (how quaint) after you show them the deposit slip counterfoil.
  • Is there any wonder the banks are in trouble and having to be bailed out when they refuse to deal with the thing they are in business for - CASH.
I find this is complete arrogance. Yesterday I went into the Halifax where I have banked for 30 + years to make an arrangement, at their convenience,to bank £200 in change. They refuse to accept it - only 5 bags at a time. I then went across the road to the Alliance & Leicester where I also have an account - same result. I then went to the Abbey where I also have an account and they have agreed to allow it ,reluctantly, if I deposit it on a Monday about 4.00 pm ish.
Why have they brought in this rule ? I cant see any rhyme or reason to it.
I have a good mind to stand outside the banks and exchange 5bags with anybody who is going in to make a deposit - that would !!!! them off.
Two or three years ago I believe you could make an arrangement to bank more bags and I thought I had actually made that arrangement with the Halifax only to be told when I got there with £300 (smallest denomination 50p) they wouldn't accept it. I then went across the road to Lloyds where I had no account and they changed it ?
What are these banks in business for ?
Can we start a movement to force them to take more change ?
Yesterday when I was relating my story to an unbelieving audience in the pub another bloke said he once went into the Halifax to bank £1800 in £2 coins and they refused to take it.
Has the world gone mad ?
I know I am not on my own when I say the banks and Building Societies are arrogant legalised thieves !
You dont know and I can't articulate how mad this makes me feel and we should do something about it.
Needless to say I left the Halifax and Alliance with no doubt about the way I felt about them - good job I didn't go in after I had a drink................

    Very ANGRY.

    PS Why 5bags ? Why not 3 bags or 7bags ? Any ideas ?
Any *ankers out there that can shed some light ?

    Don't see your problem.
Why not just spend it in the pub?

I deposited 11 bags of change in Barclays.

If they'd of limited it to 5 bags at a time I would have paid 5 in then joined the queue for the counter again and paid another 5 in next time round and so on.
    Looking forward to the future.
  • You can pour your change into a cash machine at some branches of Sainsburys. They charge 7% for this facility. Rather steep I think.

This not not the answer to the OP's question, but it should be realised that cash ( especially coin) in banks' tills takes up space, needs a safe, has to be controlled ( 2 persons in my day) and does not earn then any money.

I also wonder if the ex BSs like Alliance are even less equipped than the main stream Banks tp deal with large volumes of coin.

Those coinstar machines are a big fat waste of money. Do as babs2008 suggests and queue as many times as it takes, after a couple of goes they should be embarrassed into letting you deposit the lot on one go. Especially if it's quiet!!!
