Broadband connection speeds

I'm new and here's my first post...
I've signed up for Euro1Net recently and was expecting a free upgrade to 1Mb (from 512kb). However, both they and BT claim I'm only guaranteed 512. Thus they are capping me at 512. Am I right in thinking I'd be better off capped at 1Mb? I might not receive 1Mb but I should/could get more than 512?
Thanks,
Adam

That could be correct.
My telephone exchange support 2Mb but my telephone line will only support 1Mb. Therefore I can only get broadband at a speed of 1Mb.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Welcome
It depends on your line quality, unless it is some small print detail in the contract. If you are reasonably close to the exchange then higher speed should be possible. But it will be either 512k or 1M, not in between. How far away are you?
I was recently connected (with a different ISP) at 1Mb/s. I'm about 1km from the exchange. It took quite a few phone calls querying whether this was a mistake or a technical issue before they upgraded to the promised 2Mb/s. (I suspect they ordered it wrong from BT Wholesale)0 -
Put your phone number into the "Can I Get Broadband?" box here:
http://www.bt.co.uk/broadband/
It will tell you what speeds you can get.0 -
Thanks for the replies,
I used the BT thing and it said 512. Does that mean I definitely can't get 1Mb (on the phone line)? I'm about 3km from my exchange.

If they have tested the line and quality isnt high enough then setting a lower sync rate may actualy be bennificial. If the ISP sets your sync rate to high - then you'll actualy recive lower speeds. Its all about noise on the line which increase with distance and copper quality (or lack of it). If they lower the sync rate there is more space availble for error checking and amplifiction.0
