No Gas Supplier

I have a relative, who moved into a new build apartment. The gas was presumed to be the joint gas & electricity supplier but was not the case. Three years later, it is discovered that there is no actual gas supplier, and that the electrical supplier is just that. In effect, 3 years free gas, is that the case??? Who is liable for the last three years bills? And why has there been no bills from anyone??? Will there be a ahuge backdated bill? And who would it be payable to?? anyone got any ideas???

The energy companies can only back bill for 12 months of usage if they haven't produced a bill, try calling transco to find out who supplies the property as their should be a supplier.

if they did not register with a supplier when they moved in three yrs ago there may not be any details but National grid will check the data base for you if you call .dont bother calling transco as it no longer exists that dissapeared around 5 yrs ago

It is possible that a meter was fitted but that the builder never registered the site with a Supplier who in turn request a Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) from Xoserve (part of the old Transco). This can result in no bills. The back bill rule only applies when it is the suppliers fault not the customers. If you try egtting your elec supplier to supply your gas they will know how ling you have lived there but I have no idea what they would do about the 'old' gas useage. A new supplier wont know how long unless they check the electoral register. First thing O would do is contact Xoserve to see if there is an MPRN for your address and who they say the supplier is. If they say there is none I would play dumb with my supplier and phone them and say 'why cant I see the gas bit of my bill'. When they check they will also discover there is no MPRN and will register the site from then as I think there is a limit on back datingf registration. If there is an MPRN/Supplier then contact them and ask why you have been receivign no bills assuming you haven't been throwing any addressed to the occupier in the bin.

I am in the same position

We moved in May of last year, was told by builders that EDF were the suppliers

Despite phoning them asking for bills etc, there has never been any record of me
Tried signing up to EDF as a new customer, they couldn`t proceed as my "current" supplier wont let me go

I have phoned the national Grid several times, no record of me

My problem now is, i have since discovered that my Gas meter is not working, Im getting gas but the dials arent moving, so basically free gas. I have informed the national grid of this and they said they cant do anything as its my "suppliers" problem and until i get a supplier i will have free gas....great...but my electric meter is working..lol

Has anyone got any ideas of where to go to next ??

    Thanks
  • Thanks guys for all the replies. It seems that this could grow arms and legs!
I think there is a meter, so I will recommend that they start with the MPRN and maybe check if the meter dials are turning.

I'll pass this onto my relation, and will keep you posted as to how it ends up.
Still open for suggestions in the meantime though.

    cheers:beer:

This may sound silly but are you 100% there is a gas supply? It's not common to have gas appliances in new build flats for safety reasons. If one person doesn't get their boiler serviced ....

If the relative hasn't told the supplier who they are they are using the supply, how does the supplier know who to bill?

As it's a new build the chances are the pipework will have been installed by an IGT (independant gas transporter) so this is why national grid have no record of your home. The builders should have given you a handover pack when you moved in and this would have your MPR (meter point reference) number. If you have this call EDF and they should be able to locate an account for you. If not write to EDF and include as much information as possible i.e the original plot address, meter serial number.

if the property may be listed by igt then ng would tell you who it is and give you the number to call to reach their database - if neither hold details for what ever reason the advise we give (I am ng) is that you contact a supplier of choice advise them that ng and or igt hold no details and then you are free to register with a new supplier, and they are the new supplier is responsible for arranging for a mprn number to be generated if required - and the suppliers are fully aware of this even if some of their staff appear not to be

How do you get a gas supply without someone appointing a supplier in the first instance?
