Help childrens room

My 2 children share a bedroom. Son 8yrs daughter4yrs.

I am trying to decorate their room, but have no idea what to do. Please could anyone recommend maybe what they have done or some ideas what we can do.

There are no books that can help. I have looked.

Any help would be most appreciated

  • not sure how big the room is? what about about splitting the four walls into two different subtle colours to suit your son and daughter and personalise each area for them?

Have you tried the mouse painter? you can swap colours in room sets to give you a better idea.

Thanks I'm not sure I'll be able to use the site very well, I'll give it a go.

The kids share one end of the room as the window blows in cold air through the vents, so there is only a gap of about 2-3foot between the beds, so it wouldn't work having half and half of a room. The length is about 12 foot ish
It's so annoying, we live in a housing asso house desperate for a 3 bed, but no chance. Yet we have someone 2 doors away who has a 4 bed to herself as she conned the system, quite openly talks about it too:mad:
Never mind, have our own house oneday.
Until then this is turning out to be a nightmare.

I thought that once kids of different sexes were over 8 years old, they had to have separate rooms...? (not criticising you, just might be worth pointing out to the HA people)

How about a neutral theme (i.e. not overtly "boyish" or "girly")? Colours such as yellow, green, orange etc. Or if you're looking for a theme, how about something like the seaside, or jungle, or animals? You could get a couple of those massive pinboards, and let them have one each to stick whatever they want on it.

I'd probably do the walls very subtle and plain even in scream horror magnolia but incorporate colour with bedspreads, cushions and accessories

It may be less of an issue that way and your not tied to themes

We had a boy and a girl in the same room and we did orange and lime with jungle animals.

Sounds horrendous but was great fro kids and very unisex.
It's not paranoia if they really are after you.
  • It's 7 bb we are entitled to a 3 bed but doesn't mean we'll get one. We don't know how to work the system like some do. All the 3 beds that come up go to people who have made themselves homeless, just in time
I have tried and tried to get us moved, but with no success. I get very down about it.

But I'm trying to make the best of a bad job at the mo.

We have had a jungle theme but it's a bit babyish now. Thought about spongebob, but not sure whether you can get the bits for that.

My little girl is desperate for a princess room and my little boy wants a mini theme as in cars. Not sure how to mix those really.

Thanks for the posts so far

    Hi ,
What about a "princesses driving cars" theme? You could mask out a simple background and paint it up with tester pots of emulsion. Then either do your own artwork if you can draw, or buy those large themed stickers. I think that they are called stickarounds or something similar.
They are also meant to be easily removable when yoyu want to change the theme.
You could also try your local library for books to inspire you. (My own has loads of good ones, but tbh, they are for what I call "house beautiful" homes, not a cramped ex-council semi like mine!)
    Best of luck,
    Linda
PS You might get Spongebob stuff on Character online.

  • Thanks fab n funky mum.

Some good ideas. I have been to the library but I find the books are no good unless you have a large country house, a bedroom for each child and about £3000 to spend on each room.
As usual nothing to help the little people.

    I'll try the website ta

The stickarounds look good. I didn't want to spend a lot when I decorated my baby's room as I knew in a couple of years she'll be wanting whatever she's into!

I painted the walls a nice sunny yellow and then bought Peter Rabbit stickarounds and put them on the wall as if it was a border about 50cm wide round the room.

You could paint the walls a neutral colour and do princesses around her bed and cars around his bed, then accessorise with themed duvet covers etc.

One of my sons had Bob the Builder stickarounds and they do peel off easily if they want to change in the future.
Here I go again on my own....
