This happened to me a few days ago, but in my case it was a power spike.
I fixed it by using the recovery console on my windows xp cd and typing the following command:
    chkdsk c: /r

This is the way to go. Some of the system files have been corrupted. You need to boot to your original Windows setup CD, follow the onscreen instructions to get to the recovery console, type that command, go and have a cup of tea while it does the magic, come back, take the setup CD out, restart, all will be well.

  • Unfortunately I don't have the windows disc, as it is a second hand computer that we bought off someone without the disc. He has since moved to Australia. Looks like we're going to have to replace it with a new one.

I have seen one on Dell for £279 its the Inspiron 530 without a monitor. It looks OK for general web surfing.

If anyone knows of anything else I could try before totally giving up, please let me know.

Thanks for all your kind responses so far.
  • Explain exactly what happens you boot up in safe mode. How far does it get before it reboots ? Is there any message or warning ? Do you get a blue screen ? What happens when you try and boot up to the command prompt ? We need messages or errors or details of what happens and when ? Do you get the black screen with the Windows logo etc ? The more we know the more chance we have of helping. Can you borrow a Windows disc off someone ? Nothing wrong with this if you have a valid license key. Unless you want to buy a new PC there is not point going to buy one just because you don't have a Windows disc. Borrow someone elses to reinstall if necessary as long as you use your own CD key. If you don't have the CD key anymore and you don't want to buy a PC then just buy a new copy Windows. Much cheaper.

What "someone" has recommended is the correct procedure. OP needs a disc to repair the boot files afaik.

I had to do this to a laptop which lost power whilst being on without a battery. Got the same recycling of error message on bootup.

What make is the PC because a Dell doesn`t need a recovery disk.

My computer has been unplugged whilst it was on, and now I am getting the message,
we apologize but windows did not start successfully...

choose one of the options below..one of which is start windows normally. But when I choose this option, although it tries to restart and the windows logo appears for a few seconds, it then reverts back to the same error page as above.
Is there anything I can do to fix the problem.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you
In your first post it says "choose one of the options below", but you have only told us about one of the options. What are the other options?

Later on "SomeOne" offered a solution using a WinXP CD. Ok, you don't have your cd, but can you not borrow one? (If all else fails you can probably buy one cheaply from that well know auction site)

No need for a replacement, just borrow a windows XP setup disc of the same version (XP home or XP pro,) chuck it in the drive, startup, boot to the disc, and follow the instructions from "SomeOne's" post before.

See here if you need to find out how to boot to a CD ROM.

I have spoken to my brother in London who has a windows XP cd which I could use. I'm off down to see him the end of next week to collect it. I have bookmarked this thread so I can read what I must do with it once I have it.

So, once again I'm very grateful for all your replies, sorry I haven't responded to each of them individually.

    Thanks.
